confused front strut top bearings, question??

My strut top bearings are shot, REALLY shot!

anyhow, the local motorfactors all want me to pay £60+ for a "bearing kit" apparently these contain the whole strut top mount ETC I need 2 (£120+) this seems a little steep to me!

anyhow, there are SEVERAL sellers on ebay that are selling just the bearing for around £18 (so for 2 £36) A HUGE saving, im sure will agree! anyhow, the mechanic i use for big jobs says that just the bearing wont work as the rubbers ETC will be shot too, a cursory google says he is wrong! the rubbers and mount are usually fine, and just get the bearing off the bay!

SOOOOOOOO thoughts please chaps! will I be ok with just a bearing, or will it need the whole mount, rubbers, bolts and bearing you get in the kit??

cheers chaps, from 1 confused bungle!

    Same here.

OE quality ones from AutoVaux were about £35 delivered for the pair.

they aint cheap ones matey, there febi bilstein ones!

I just really dont see the point in doing the whole mount, when a bearing will suffice!

    Cheers

sorry to hijack, but what are symptoms of worn strut top bearings? Do you have to dismantle strut to replace them or just remove it from car. I have spring compressors if need be.
I have been having a particular problem with front, tramlining at low speed over rough ground and body roll side to side, wiggles under braking sometimes too. I have done arb bushes and drop links. I had thought shocks but the ride is generally ok, no bouncing, only at low speed under certain conditions. It stays quite flat round corners. I had thought track rod ends but there is no play at 9+3. Its doing my head in cos its like there is a specific thing wrong but I cant figure out what it is, and I don't want to start replacing suspension components willy nilly. It will need new front tyres soon. Is it worth swapping front and rear tyres seeing if this helps?

I suppose they could cause tramlining ETC, but the one thing thats gives it away as the top strut bearing is the CONSTANT crick crunch crunch crick grind ever time you move the steering wheel!

just get the bearing and yes you do have to dismantle the struts no matter if you buy the top mount or just the bearing , they arent that much dearer in the dealers
the dearest part will be the labour if you're not doing it yourself
