Throttle position sensor has went open circuit imo This is more like to be in the Throttle body. My 1.9CDTI done the same, spanner light, nothing from the throttle pedal but the engine sat at 1,500rpm.

i had this happen to me - turned the engine off and and turned it back on again and it worked fine.......I did have the codes read and it chucked up the throttle position sensor code twice - two different ones.....

so how do you rectify this issue?

    thanks,

well for the 1.9 I removed the throttle plate and problem disappeared. I have now soldered the broken joints but not replaced the plate. No issues anyway. Get any possible fault codes read. There should be some stored.

They told me the pedal but it was the throttle body that was faulty on mine. Try and get a second opinion, if it was a 1.9 you had I would sya TB but as it's a 1.7 I can only say by the symptoms you're describing it's the TB.
