    Default Another tyre saga

Bought a set of 4 Dunlop SPT MAXX tyres on 27/02/10

Just replaced the front Dunlop’s today and thought I would get all 4 wheels off to check brakes etc.

The drivers side rear Dunlop had to be replaced a while ago (still looked new) due to a screw in the side wall.

So the only Dunlop tyre still on the car is the passenger side rear. When I took it off there is a crack in the rubber running round the inner part of the tyre/tread (it’s not continuous, there are occasional gaps) and there are cracks in the innermost parts of the tread that go off at 45Deg. This tyre has always been on the back.

I can’t believe this is normal it does not give me confidence for motorway driving.

This looks like a manufacturing issue, has anybody seen this before. Out of interest, If they fitted summer tyres and I ran them over the winter would that cause any problems – I’m not sure if they are but surely a company like McConechy’s would not fit unsuitable tyres (they were changed at the end of Feb – during the winter!).

It looks like a manufacturing issue to me – but I thought some of the guru’s on here may be able to advise whether it is normal or unsafe.

Cracking has been seen on some of Goodyear's NCT5s, but (IIRC) only on ones made in their Slovenian factory, not ones made in Germany. The cracks ran across the tyre, perpendicular to the sidewalls, and were indeed a manufacturing defect.

Hi Jezzy, I remember the NCT issue well – I used to fit them when I used 215s'. Not wanting to fit NCT’s was one of the things that made me move to the 225 size, there were a lot more options and the tyres (in 225 size) were cheaper.

These are not budget tyres, I expected better

Same happened on rear tyres of a corsa combo van we have for our business, they were continentals, replaced by dealer no question asked. They had covered about 40,000 miles.

Take the tyre back to the original supplying agent, along with the receipt, and request they send it for an inspection and report

In the meantime can you supply the :
    batch code,
month / year and country of manufacture,
    exact tyre specification
    date and mileage when fitted
    date and mileage when removed

I previously reported on Dunlop Maxx tyres in 225/45R17 XL and the issues with them
A similar issue has recently affected Michelin tyres, suggesting a manufacturing process issue (in order to meet some silly EU changes)

I've had 80,000 miles from my rear pair of Goodyear NCT5 tyres. I've had the car from new and they were as fitted to the car at new, only replaced them once I got to 80,000 miles and the guy fitting the new ones (another pair of NCT5's) observed that the old ones still had 2-3mm on them!! I've also found that the Goodyears are much quieter than other tyres having replaced with others on the front pair. I've had my current Vectra from new and currently approx 90,000 miles.

I'm now buying another Vectra and I've asked the garage to fit NCT5's to the rear!!

Yes, you could get 80K miles from a set of rear tyres
However, this will mean you are wearing out vastly more front tyres, typically every 20K miles
Also those rear tyres will be quite old, compared to the front tyres
Finally, the average tread depth will always be varying, whereas if you fit new tyres to the rear and rotate you will have a higher average, with the maximum on the rear
I certainly wouldn't recommend driving with just 3mm of tread on the rear, with the front tyres anywhere between 8mm and 1.6mm and wearing down

    Just had an after thought
From the photos, could you also advise as to the side edge of each tyre, ie inside edge / outside edge
Also, what tyre pressures were used

I will do some more digging tomorrow - the car normally runs lightly loaded (just me driving) I try to keep the tyre(s) around 36.
