Default Looking at a laptop - would you buy this?

    Folks,

Im looking at buying a laptop.

Having recently moved I am due to have my BB go live in the next few days. I already have an old Toshiba Portege laptop, but doubt it would be up to the job for todays requirements and I prefer to keep that seperate as its got my Op-Com on there.

Anyway, im looking at this: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/241152.

Its an Acer unit @ £269.00 delivered inc VAT.

Normally id be very weary of Acer as we have had issues with warranty at work, but its only going to be light/med user at home.

    What do you think?

I have also seen one through work which I could possibly have VAT exepmted (paid through company).
    This is a:

    • Toshiba Satellite Pro C660D-187 Notebook PC
    • AMD Dual-Core Processor E-350 - 1.6 GHz
    • 4GB RAM
    • 500GB HDD
    • 15.6" Toshiba TruBrite® HD TFT
    • AMD Radeon™ HD 6310 Graphics
    • DVD Super Multi drive (Double Layer)
    • Wi-Fi® - Fast Ethernet LAN - Bluetooth® 3.0 + HS
    • Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit (pre-installed, Toshiba-HDD recovery)
This would cost me £255.00 delivered (its actually a product with a slightly defective box but product is mint with all accessories that should be in the box).

Please can you offer me your independant advice. Best part of £300 is a lot to stump up so dont want to make the wrong choice.

    Thanks.

I've always had Acer laptops with no problems. The eBuyer one you listed is a good price, and a good specification. I've missed this one, and am looking for a new laptop, certainly considering this one now

As for Toshiba, having never owned one, but a mate of mine had one that went faulty a number of times in the first year. Ended up getting her money back and bought an Acer unit.

I also do desktop computer and laptop repairs in my spare time for friends / family / colleagues, etc. Don't think I've ever had an Acer unit ion for repair.

My recommendation is for the Acer unit

Laptops are such proven technology these days, it is hard not to get something which is going to be reliable.

Acer probably uses components and chipsets which you would find in higher priced units, so its the name you would be paying for.

Dont think you're going to be going far wrong with this one mate... especially at that price.

I have just been chatting to a couple of colleagues and they have pointed out that the Toshiba one has a bigger HDD, has Bluetooth, comes with 4gb RAM instead of 3gb, and works out slightly cheaper IF I can buy it through work (ex VAT).

True, I am paying for the name, but at work we sell Toshiba & HP all day everyday, just not a Windows 7 Home machine.

    Oh people, help me.

I am awayed by the Tosh (again due to brand), but your comments have given me a itch for the Acer.

Histrocally Acer have been cheap and woeful in terms on design and robustness and their warranty was appauling, but having said that we have not touched an Acer machine for about 4 years so have they come a long way forward ot not?

Also, I have never owned an AMD processor, always been an Intel person, which would you recommend me as a home use? Use will be for photos, emails, ebay, forums, downloading, just usual home user, etc etc.

I hate my Acer, never boots first time and although it had blue-ray on it the picture is terrible. My first laptop was a Toshiba and it was a far better machine than my Acer and lasted 5 years before the HD went on it. My dad bought a Recon Toshiba a few years back and its still going strong too.

Right, I have bit the bullet.Ive gone against the grain slightly with regards to the above comments, but I have taken into consideration DasArabs comments and my previous experience of Acer and have opted for the Toshiba.

My colleague who is a Geek read the specs and compared them for me and said deffo Tosh, so done.

Should be with me tomorrow and I will get away without paying the VAT as my boss will take care of that.

    Thank you everyone.
