A strange thing happened yesterday....

Hello to all on the forums.

Something strange happened yesterday as I was driving to my parents which I am at a loss to explain so I was hoping that if I described what happened somebody here might be able to hazard a guess.

My car is a 2006 Vectra (post facelift) 1.8i petrol. As I was driving I started to hear what sounded like a scratching noise coming from the front (drivers side) of the car. My first thought was that I had got something caught around the wheel, so I pulled over and the noise stopped as soon as the car came to a halt. Revving the engine didn't produce the noise, only when the car moved but I could see nothing attached to the wheel or the underside. Then the more I listened it seemed to be coming from the top of the engine bay and sounded more like hissing. I opened the bonnet but could see nothing amiss, no steam, no liquid or loose hoses.

I decided to try and nurse the car to my parents house for a better look and thirty seconds or so after setting off the noise stopped and has not returned.

I'm totally mystified so any suggestions gratefully received.

I was going to suggest a broken spring. I've heard stories of front springs snapping and then rubbing on the inside of the tyre.

Other than that, I dont have any other suggestions

Stray cat having a snooze on engine? Wife had it happen, it was hiding up side of battery on her MPV. Feral, got ripped to shreds removing it.
