I would go for something with a little more grunt if poss maybe the 2.0t
but at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice
whichever you choose the facelift does look good
seriously looking into a change in the new year (poss vxr )if not deffo the 3.0 cdti

Mines a 1.8 SRI 03 pre-facelift and i've been surprised at how well it will go considering the weight of the car. It's a reasonable blend of performance and economy.

It can be a bit sluggish sometimes I suppose, like if you catch it in the wrong gear but handling is great and it has often put a smile on my face !

I had a 2.0DTI (B) before it and the performance is very similar although the 1.8 has much more driveability and rev ability IMO.

The turbo lag on the DTI used to drive me nuts !

Strangely i dont get turbo lag from mine, i would love the 3.0 cdti or even a 1.9, but i'm a bit concerned about future costs and reliability of the common rail diesels, hence the reason i'm looking at the 1.8, plus trade sales in slough have them for about £1500 cheaper than the diesels.

I used to have problems when slowing down for traffic lights or the car in front turning off the road, if I went too slow in 2nd gear it took for ever to get going again !!

Try taking a 1.8 for a test drive and see what you think, it's quite rare these days to be out of 3rd gear on the routes I travel on anyway so high performance wasn't at the top of my wish list ! and i've still managed to get a few point with it

If you go for a 1.8, make sure you do the air box mod and replace the standard air filter with a K&N....makes a wad of difference.....

I've got the 1.8 sxi on '53' plate. I know it's not the most powerful, but it doesn't do bad considering the size of the car. It can break speed limits on private test tracks if you want to .
Cruises on motorway no problem & I'm usually getting about 32 - 33 mpg every week, without being a Sunday driver (even though the wife thinks I drive like one).
Like people have said, it is worth doing air box mod & fitting different filter.
