Default Possible diff gone on Vectra C

I reversed my vectra up the drive today, after I pulled up I noticed loads of oil all over the drive. After futher investigation there was a split in the (Diff cover???) underneath the gearbox. There was also a gear 5cm in diamiter that had been split in half on the driveway too. The car drives in every gear including reverse, just not sure what the cog is and where it is from?? Any why the car still drives. Any ideas would be great

is the split in the cover big enough for the cog to go through ? just to make sure its from here ?
    #any pics of it ?
dont drive it till its investigated properly or you could do in the whole gearbox and driveshafts .

The split was just about big enough, when i pulled it apart more it just dropped out, I would say 4-5cm in long, the cog would have approx 10 teeth on it when it was whole. I will get a picture on tomorrow, I went to vauxhall dealer, they said looking at their diagrams that it was part of the diff, apparently there is two of them inside???

After doing some reasearch, it seems like it is one of the planet gears. Can these be changed, or is it a new box?

ffs dont drive it... if you drive it and the diff seizes you could cause a major accident. The planet gear can almost certainly be changed however since you have a crack/hole in the diff with bits falling out I'd expect a repair to be expensive.

I recently got a replacement box in my 1.8 due to a noisey diff , got a close ratio too so it drives much better than the wide one.
150 for the box an 200 fitting , like a new car
