    Unhappy 2.0 Diesel

My cars had is 40k service and its had the rear brake pads replaced again. 1st they were changed at 20k and now at 40k, but the fronts were changed at 30k. Does anyone know why the rears wear quicker than the fronts. ????
Also I had a strange clonking noise from Front Side Near wheel when I drove at low speeds (20mph) over a bumpy road, dealer told me its the steering rack thats faulty and they have changed quite a few . Is this another common fault ????

Its almost certainly not the steering rack. Much more likely to be worn bushes on the front suspension. Most people just put up with it. My previous 1.8 had this at 6 months old and 9k on the clock.

Thankyou for your responses. Let me explain myself, I originally noticed this noise months ago and the noise gradually got louder. Dealer has now hanged the steering rack and the loud noise has gone. But the original noise that I heard months ago is still there. When I pull onto someones drive, where there kerbs are raised, when the near side front wheel makes contact, thats when I hear the noise. I don't think its life threatening, but I would like it resolved.

get the anti roll bar links changed, and while it's apart, throw under another set of antiroll bar mounting bushes.. all the parts, under £60... job done..

Well, I took it back yesterday and now its booked in again next week, as there is play in the rod ends. Would I be correct in assuming that the rod ends can damage the steering rack and this could have happened to mine ?
Does anyone have a schematic of the rod end / suspension assembly ??

The rod ends can't really damage the steering rack.. they will just knock if there's any play in them..did they say what was wrong with the old rack.. Freeplay in the rack?? or worn bar teeth?

I am very surpirsed that they re-fitted old track rod ends to a new rack thou.. what a penny pinching exersize!! talk about 1/2 a job!!

If it is the rod ends, then they should be changed FOC..it's not a big job at all..

The dealer didn't say what was wrong with the old streering rack, but my rod ends have been changed and the noise has gone. But I need to get my steering wheel re-aligned. Its slightly out and now that I'm conscious of it, it keeps playing on my mine. I keep hold the steering wheel dead on straight and the car goes off to the left. Is this a difficult job ?????
