    Default Air con noise

I try to make sure I turn my air con on now and then at least once every couple of weeks to keep the system ticking over. When I turned it on today I noticed that it was making a hissing sound even when running and when I turned off the engine with the air con still switched on you could still hear the hiss while the engine switch off and it gradually went away as the system shut down. The air con itself seems to be working and is cool but just wonder if this hissing noise is anything to worry about?

Also is it worth having the air con on all the time to ensure that you do not run into problems with it, even though your mpg might go down?

The hiss normally means that its low on gas. You need to run the aircon to keep all the seals etc lubricated.

yep you should have been ok running it as often as you have but, i think the condenser has took a hit and vented your gas out, as said above hissing is a sign of low gas

Thanks for the replies. Do you think I need to get it checked out and see how it runs over the next couple of days. I have just went out and changed by pollen filter and was surprised how dirty it was, it was really bad and doesn't look like its ever been changed

Tried the air con again today and is was hissing but still cold. Would you advise leaving the air con button switched on all the time?

Personally yes. You can then control the temperature with the heating knob. Basically what you'll then have is a manual version of climate control.

As said, you could leave it on. It will either stop working i.e. if the gas is leaking it will all leak away if you leave it on, or it will continue working indefinately and continue hissing or it will continue working and maybe stop hissing. If it were me, i'd leave it on and see what happens, nothing to gain or lose really.

I had this problem with my car upon getting it back from Pentagon after its first MOT.

A couple of days later when I turned on the AC for the first time post MOT, I heard hissing; immediately I called Pentagon who asked if I'd bring it in for them to look at. They said gas was escaping and it'd cost me £85 for them to refill it.

Included with my MOT test was a 'Aircon spring clean'.

My AC worked perfectly before I took it for the MOT; it is too coincidental that this problem started independently of them servicing my AC. I have contacted Pentagon's customer care and am awaiting feedback.

What could cause the hissing? Nokiaman mentions that it could be the result of a 'condenser being hit'; is it possible that that happened during the servicing?

I'm slightly peeved at the way my car works less well than it did before the test, and they want to charge me another £85 to fix it.

I'm having my aircon sorted next week.

It was regassed last year, but never really icy cold.
The place I bought it from regassed it, on the cheap I guess, never did trust them.

Anyway taking it to a proper recommended garage, they want it most of the day to do it properly.
BTW it was working ok ish last week, but now it hisses a lot on start up and never gets cold and coughs and farts and splutters when turned off.

I do use it weekly, but at the moment it's cooler having the windows open.

    Mick
