Default 2010 Insigina sri 2.0 CDTi sport tourer suspension woes...?

    Hi guys,

trying to pull together a bit of information for a collegue of mine. For the past 4 years or so hes been running a 1,9 cdti signum Elite automatic.

Recently he traded up to a 2010 Insignia SRi cdti sport tourer automatic. Hes find the suspension and ride generally far to hard. Descriped as 'bouncy' on A roads etc.

Now i advised him that its the difference between Elite & SRi, going back to the vectras, the difference is 15mm height, as well as harder... is this the same for the Insignia range?

Further more, the car came with 18inch wheels, which he has taken off, and now fitted 17inch wheels, he informs me its made little difference..

Hes now considering changing the shocks and springs.. hoping its a cheaper option than selling and loosing alot of money. ideally putting and elite setup on the car and keeping his SRi stuff in the loft fot if he ever sells the car.

As i dont know much about the insignia, please could you guys help? Is the Insigina generally a harder ride than a vectra? Or is it simply the difference between elite/Sri?

Further more, would you think a set of Elite (or other model?) Shocks and springs would cure this?

    Cheers for any help..

    Mike

I would say elite springs would be more for comfort than the SRI springs, I've only driven the hatchback both SRI and Exclusiv and the difference is unreal.
My Exclusiv has a lot of body roll in corners but driving on A roads is smooth, The SRI has better cornering hardly any body roll, A road driving was fine but not as smooth.

I would stick with 18" wheels and make sure pressure is correct then maybe swapp to a softer setup like the Elite or Exclusiv

Mind you hasn't the sports tourer got sports button ?

Hmm, not sure about that one.. i will ask him about the button!

So am i right to think the shocks wont be any different between SRi & Elite? If so just change the spring over and that should help.. (as long as its not got sport button)

    Interesting.. thanks!

The SRI sports tourer harsh ride thing is ringing a bell. There was guy on IE who said the car he had was the worst he had ever owned and at the time none of us ( including the estate owners) could understand what the problem was. I can't find the thread now so I can't remember what the outcome was.

For general info on the Insignia SRI it's pretty much what Don said. The car is more planted than the vectra especially when changing direction at reasonable speed but the ride is not particularly harsh. I've done a few journeys from Capel Curig to Chester recently along the A roads and TBH the car is brilliant. This is with the 18" Contact Sport 3s. (2010 SRI Hatch)

I'm not sure what your colleague means by bouncy. If he means it wallows on the springs then that definitely ain't right. If he means the car is skittish then yes I have experienced that but only on a really bumpy road when travelling too fast. I'm sure the vectra would have reacted in the same way in that instance. I assume the tyre pressures are fine.

Might be worth taking a test drive in another ST to compare the ride.

I think its the latter you mentioned, i think he doesnt like the skittish bit! Me personally? well im running 19s & Eibachs so it dont bother me the same!

Hes just trying to work out how to get the ride softer.. thus far changing from 18s to 17s he says is no different. Hes played with tyre pressure to no avail, so next step is he thinks he should of bought an Elite! But selling and buying will cost a fortune, were as changing suspension, although costly, may be cheaper..

We just now trying to work out if the car needs shocks & springs... or just spring..

There are 3 different chassis set up's for diesel insignia
    1. Std - this includes elite
    2. Lowered sport chassis - e.g. SRi
    3. Lowered chassis - Ecoflex

So your friend has 2 options for OE fitment...
    1. Fit Std chassis springs - this will soften the ride but will increase ride height
    2. Fit EcoFlex springs - these are softer but the ride height will be similar to the SRi.

I can give you the correct PN's. if you need.

Does he have the Flexride Option fitted to the car?

If so he will have Sport and Tour buttons on the dash, under the main display.

Pressing the Sport button would stiffen the suspension even more.

Pressing the Tour button would soften up the suspension.

Hi guys, thanks for this, he hasnt got sport button, just standard SRI set up.

So im guessing the answer is change the springs, the Ecoflex springs option sounds interesting? Is there a way of knowing if he has them?

    Cheers
