Default Power Steering failed then started working....

    Hi All

My wife just came home and said the power steering had failed and the stering wheel with explanation mark warning light was on on dash. When she got home we turned the engine off and on again and it is all working fine and no warning light on. Just wondered if this is something thats hapened to others and if anyone knows why it would happen?! (Cars an 07 1.8vvti)

    Cheers in advance

This same thing happened to me on thursday. Just went stiff whilst doing a 3 point turn so switched off and on again and it was fine. Fluid level ok. No lights on dash. 1.8vvt sri 2006.

If you have a Multimeter check the voltage at the battery with the engine running 13.5-14.4 is ok, below that alternator may be on its way out.

I mentioned this in another post, but I'll put it here too for these members... I had intermittant issues with my PS cutting out and going stiff for a few seconds/minutes at a time. As I didn't have time to drain and refill the entire steering system, I siphoned the fluid out the reservoir, and refilled that with new fluid. This worked a treat. The following week, I drained teh entire system when I had the time. Been fine since. That was 10k miles ago, and still feels like new.

How much fluid did you need to do the whole system?

Think I used about 3 litres. Not sure if it was all drained out, as my container was getting full, and I was lying uncomfortably under the car, so I re-attacthed the pipe, and filled with new stuff.
