    Exclamation Power steering fault

Hi Guys, i'm new to this website & i'm impressed with the knowledge & support you give out!
Ok, i have a Vectra SRi (Facelift)55plate 1.8 petrol, from day 1 i've had intermittent problems with the power steering going stiff. I've had into a garage & put on the diagnostics, the guy said i need either a new ECU or Power steering module & quoted me around £200 for the module supplied & fitted, if this doesn't rectify it then i'm looking at £600 for a new ECU!!!
Any remedies or tips i could DIY, i understand that if i fit a new module i still have to go & get it married up!

Hi Mate new myself to diesels apart from work vans that were covered but done an awful lot of reading before i bought anothe car after owning a mondy 52 plate 1.8 zetec from new, Does the battery light come on when the steering goes stiff, if so have you had the alternator & battery checked, Don't know if it's the same on petrols but i looked at various saab tid's same engine as cdti's with power steering problems that pointed to this. Hope you get it sorted. Tommy

i know the corsa c has a electronic power steering common fault has my cousin has one lol he is only 5' 4" and twenty odd,
the below is taken from another source regarding intermittent steering problem for a vectra 2002-2008 which is in your range

first port of call will be a battery check and then a charging system check, the system that you have is known as EHPS Electro Hydralic Power Steering, if either is not up to scratch then this will/can cause problems

Might sound daft, but have you checked the fluid level?

I had exactly the same symptoms on mine (occasional stiffness), turned out I needed half a litre of fluid. That was 10k miles ago. Still fine now, and not dropped at all...

Cheers Tony-1977 it was the 1st thing i checked hence why i opted for a diagnostic. However i might change the fluid just to be on the safe side incase it's dirty!
I'll get my battery checked as an air of caution, cheers!

If your car's a 2005 model, and the fluid's never been changed, I'd change it now. Dirty fluid caused my power steering to be juddery and it would just go off for a few seconds when it wanted to. I siphoned the fluid out the reservoir and refill it with clean fluid. That was enough to make it like new. A few days later, I drained the entire system and changed it all. Made the world of difference.

As for the battery, stick a multi-meter across the terminals with the engine running. The reading should be 14 - 14.5 volts. If it's any lower, your alternator may be suspect, as the power steering uses a lot of power, it's usually first thing that shows a weakness.
