Default Any cdti 120 experts in here?

As per title, but with a twist!

Uncle has a Fiat Croma with the 1.9 120bhp engine as fitted to the vectra.

Car drives fine most of the time, but will occasionally lose almost all power. Then starts to belch black smoke out the back, so much he cant see the car behind!!!

Park the car for 45 minutes or so, jump back in and she's like a new one again!

NO warning lights whatsoever, he's at a complete loss!

Unfortunately he loves the car, despite having spent a fortune on it after the water pump seized, taking out the timing belt and most of the valves!

If the car would just die he would replace it, but when it's going he loves it.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm thinking egr related but am no mechanic.

    Thanks in advance

def sounds egr related,if it hasnt thrown a fault code maybe its only gunged up and not corroded on the internal gubins, ive a 120,the egr is easy to wip off, give it a flush through with carb cleaner and check the hole into the manifold that completely clogs, make sure u pull the crap out of the hole ,be carefull not to knock it in,while ure there wip the boost sensor off ,ule be suprised just how crappy these get on the 120,the 120 dosent have an oil seperator the craps sucked out the oil breather and put straight into the turbo and intercooler, put it down as a regular maintanace thing, a clean should only take u bout an hour all in,let us no how u get on

Doesn't it sound quite a lot like a DPF going through its regeneration cycle?

Does it have a dpf?? It is classed as an estate so maybe possible? But would it lose all power while doing a regen though?

I mate sounds like egr valve, it gets stuck with black gunge, clean it or blank it off and should be doing well especially with some cleaner through.

    cheers

Also check the boost pipe. If there are a leak it will be less power and black smoke.

Fault is intermittent though, wouldn't a split pipe do it all the time?
