    Default Front Suspension Spring

Hi all, i own a 2004 Vectra Club estate 1.8.

On Wednesday i was parked outside my Daughters school picking her up, i must have been parked for only a few minutes, when i heard this almighty twang/bang and then felt the car lurch forward, or so it felt.

I managed to drive the car home, thankfully i only live half a mile from school.

Now this car was only MOTd last month.

Prior to it going in i did explain to the fella that when i go over a slight bump i get a loud thumping noise.

After it being inspected and told of a few advisory things, i was told that the side making the noise was because of a track rod end that needed replacing, so i paid him to do it and got my MOT.

And then the above happened, i have a friend, and TBH i should have went to him first, who has been in the motor trade for years, and got him to look at it, so he collects iton his wagon and we take it to his friends garage, who upon inspection tells me that the front suspension spring had snapped, so i left it with him to repair.

He rings me later to tell me it was now fixed, so i go to pick it up, and whilst there i ask to see it, and it had the recent snap as it was still silver where it had snapped, but it also had another fracture where it was rusty and had been snapped for a while.

Thankfully it went when and where it did, as i dread to think what would have happened if i was actually driving.

But how did the MOT inspector fail to notice the flaw, especially as it had already snapped once.

    Anyone Else experienced this.

Now it runs like a dream, no noises etc

And i got him to replace the other side as a precaution,£117.00 supplied and fitted.

Its probably the most common fault on a Vectra. There's a poll on here somewhere.

To be honest, coil springs go on most cars nowadays. Combination of inferior quality parts (cost cutting) and potholes (cost cutting).

ps - when mine went, i was advised (and did) to replace both sides. I'll also change the rears as soon as I can, You wouldnt want a spring to snap on the motorway.

Have seen a few where they have broken but not fully broken so they sag down at the base and you cant see.

Maybe thats what happened which is why it looked ok.

Yes, I had a similar experience with a successful MOT with broken spring, see here.

The spring had broken close to the end within the protective sleeve. I did get some occasional noise from the front but myself couldn't see anything when checking, nor obviously did the tester - MOT done at a general tyre fit place that I have used for many cars, not a Vx dealer. The Vx dealer spotted it when they 'threw in' a general "once over" FOC when I booked in for an Air Con service 3 days after the MOT. I'm just glad they did it as I'm going to be beginning a long daily commute soon and I hate to think what may have happened had I been doing it with a failed spring that could easily have fractured again somewhere else. I had both fronts replaced as a result, the proper way to do it, and all is quiet again now as well as a firmer but not harsh ride.

I had one go a few months ago. I was going quite slow, about 20mph. (Un)fortunately, I was about 100 yards from Kwik Fit, so I limped in and had it changed. I noticed that THAT side was sitting higher than the other. I mentioned this to the fitter who said it's normal, and will settle, and the other side will be worn. OK I said, no probs. I changed the other side a week later. The Kwik Fit side still sits higher. Turns out they have put a standard spring in, and not the SRI one. They are now refusing to swap it for the right one. I'm having a right battle with their head office at the minute!

Thanks mate. At worse, I'll just replace that spring myself, it's just a matter of principle, why should I spend just over £30 on a new spring to fix their incompetence!
