    Default Thoughts on DPF’s.

    As follows:
If a filter is placed in a system to reduce emissions of any substance (say for argument sake to reduce the amount of Soot particles released into the atmosphere). Should this said filter be removed and disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner when full and a new filter put in its place? Or should it be periodically cleaned by burning the soot off with extreme temperatures thus emitting concentrated amounts of harmful gasses produced in the in the re-gen/cleaning process into the atmosphere?

IMO, The re-gen is a cop out by the manufacturer to allow the company to pass certain EU laws and bypass MOT emissions/smoke testing on their vehicles. How anyone can think saving up and then burning something off in short concentrated bursts (when no one is looking so to speak). Will release less of the stuff they were stopping from escaping to the atmosphere in the first place. This is beyond me.

Surely the end result is the same?

The same amount of carbon or whatever substance will end up in the atmosphere whichever way it is burned. I would have thought the larger soot particle would settle more quickly as it is heavier thus being more atmospherically friendly. Opposed to atomising the stuff into a gas at very high temperatures which intern can diffuse into the water vapour in our atmosphere turning into acid rain for example!

    What do you think?

I know, I must have too much time on my hands……

The soot is burned and turns to ash, which settles in the bottom of the DPF. Thats why i think that after time, the ash builds up causing more and more frequent regens untill it can regen no more. Effectively, a DPF should be considered part of a high mileage major service, maybe 150k, just a though not fact.

    An interesting hypothesis.
So why all of the extra smoke when on a re-gen?

I have never seen my car smoke during regen, so unsure why others say they have seen there Veccy's doing it. Quite often, the regen starts on mine as i arrive at work, so holding the revs around 2500 for ten mins while sitting in the car park does the regen. We have a concrete car park and not once has it been marked black from soot or smoke during regen.

I've had my car over 4 years and I've only noticed it doing a regen once, and I'm not 100% certain about that one. The mpg dropping on the screen quite dramatically for a short period was my only indication. I've never seen smoke from my car and the tail pipes have always been spotlessly clean. So a dpf can't be all bad. I take my car for a 100 mile round trip a couple of times a week averaging 70ish, and I don't do many short journeys in it, so maybe this is why I've had no trouble whatsoever from it.

Silly question - does yours even have one mate...? It was only on facelift automatics, estates and signums...

That’s part of the point I’m trying to make …..Do they not just catch all of the Cr@p the exhaust is throwing out save it all up then just burn it off into the atmosphere in a re-gen. I can’t see the point of them. It all still goes up in smoke!

It’s a bit mental really. Some say they get more smoke on a re-gen and then others say the only way they notice a re-gen is in progress is that the mpg increases??????
Ok so if the DPF is there to filter and cut emissions from the exhaust gasses from burned fuel and I emphasise the burning of the fuel. Why do you need to burn more fuel to clean it? Burning more fuel = more smoke!! The whole thing is a vicious circle! The top and bottom of it all is…….IMO it’s only there to appease the red tape. But in the real world I don’t think they make a ha’peth of difference to the environment.
