As follows:
If a filter is placed in a system to reduce emissions of any substance (say for argument sake to reduce the amount of Soot particles released into the atmosphere). Should this said filter be removed and disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner when full and a new filter put in its place? Or should it be periodically cleaned by burning the soot off with extreme temperatures thus emitting concentrated amounts of harmful gasses produced in the in the re-gen/cleaning process into the atmosphere?
IMO, The re-gen is a cop out by the manufacturer to allow the company to pass certain EU laws and bypass MOT emissions/smoke testing on their vehicles. How anyone can think saving up and then burning something off in short concentrated bursts (when no one is looking so to speak). Will release less of the stuff they were stopping from escaping to the atmosphere in the first place. This is beyond me.
Surely the end result is the same?
The same amount of carbon or whatever substance will end up in the atmosphere whichever way it is burned. I would have thought the larger soot particle would settle more quickly as it is heavier thus being more atmospherically friendly. Opposed to atomising the stuff into a gas at very high temperatures which intern can diffuse into the water vapour in our atmosphere turning into acid rain for example!
