For info: how the DPF works in your Car

for those of us who cannot be bothered to read the manual:

This info is for the following engines:

Diesel 19 CDTi 150 PS, engne code Z19DTH (UK)
Diesel 1.9 CDTi 120 PS, engine code Z19DH (UK)

Fitted to the following Cars:

Vectra C Estate (Manual or Automatic)

Signum (Manual or Automatic)

Vectra C Hatchback/Saloon with Automatic Gear Box fitted only

Please note:This does not apply to Hatchbacks/Saloons with manual gearbox as they have no DPF fitted

The diesel particle filter system removes
polluting soot particles out of the engine
exhaust gases. The system includes a
self-cleaning function that operates
automatically while driving. The filter is
cleaned by burning the trapped soot
particles at a high temperature. There may
be an increase in fuel consumption,
exhaust smell, and engine cooling fan
operation

during the self-cleaning
operation.
The self-cleaning function can not operate
automatically during certain driving
situations where the engine does not reach
its normal operating temperature. An
example of this would be driving only short

distances in cold weather.

If the filter needs cleaning and recent
driving situations did not allow the function
to automatically operate, then the control
indicator (coil symbol-glow plug light)

will flash. If this occurs, then
you may continue to drive the vehicle
normally. The vehicle will not be damaged
and does not require service.
The self-cleaning function will
automatically operate while driving after
the engine has reached its normal
operating temperature. The control
indicator (coil symbol-glow plug light)will continue to flash until the
self-cleaning operation is complete. This
may take up to 20 minutes of driving. The
time will be shorter at higher vehicle

speeds.

Got the engine code wrong should be Z19DTL not Z19DH

Also, the coil symbol/heater plug light doesn't flash on most facelift cars.

Thanks a lot - very interesting - would the operation of the DPF be affected by the thermostat being faulty and the engine not reaching its proper working temperature?

Thats because when it does it automatically the symbol does NOT flash.
If you drive your car regulary over long distances then you may never see the "symbol come on it all the time you own the car. We drive a lot of miles and after checking Op-com it has regened several times but we were never aware of it

Simple answer is yes, it would do a forced regen at some point and the "symbol" light would flash if the correct temperture was never reached for long enough.

Best get the thermostat changed as soon as. Have just done mine and it does make a difference.

The thermostats fail a lot and I am sure that plays a big part with many peoples issues with the DPF without them realising. There is a modified thermostat available from VX. Your car temperture should get to at least 85 within 10-15 mins of driving and then never go below 85 for the reast ofthe journey. If it does even in winter your Thermostat has had it!

"On the drivers door plate look at the last number on the plate; it will either be:

0.5 - You have a DPF
1.20 - You don't have DPF"
