    Default Power Steering Issues, Solved

This is for everyone thats had Power Steering faults, I hunted this forum and other help forums, other vauxhall forums and couldnt find someone who had solved the problem and said well my cars fault needed this this and that and then it was totally fixed.
I know there has been loads of people with problems and they'll take it to vauxhall because they beleive they are the correct people for the job. How Worng, here is my story.

2 weeks ago my power steering cut off whilst driving, steering got very very heavy, even heavier than a car without power steering. So i though must be the level as the orange warning light came on little steering wheel with ! in the middle. So once i stopped i got power steering fluid in and next time i drove it, the power steering worked.
Next day it cut off again, i couldnt see any leaks and level was at the top. So my searching on forums began. I found loads of people who had ....
Replaced pump ... then it still wasnt fixed
Replace Alternator ... then it still wasnt fixed
Replaced Battery ... Still wasnt fixed,

i found that due to the electrical voltage level drop of perhaps the alternator or battery failing the power steering control module can shut down.
So i got a volt meter checked voltage it was 13.9 at idle
    dropped to 10.8 on crank
so i thought maybe the alternator wasnt at its best so £170 later and £50 to my mate who's a mechanic, job was done, i maybe could've done it myself but not ever seeing it get done before i wanted it done properly.

    To no avail...
So he got a snap on diagnostic checker from his work and it said fault .. electronic control module.
I wanted to find this module at first i thought it must look like an ecu i got told its under the drivers side headlight,
    its under the wing.
    its on the steering rack
    its under the steering colum.
i stripped my car and found a computer with 2 conections under drivers side wheel arch lining, I took conections off and wd40'd them, NO avail.

So i got on the phone to vauxhall in 2 local towns both told me complete utter rubbish, had no care at all they were adamant that it was the pump and it would solve all of my problems. with ridiculous quotes of £495 + vat for supply a pump only and another £560+ vat supply only.
Didnt care i had a diagnostic of electronic power steering control module.

I wasnt convinced So i called an actual Power Steering company in the city Glasgow about 30-40 miles away. They said if its the pump it would be genuine GM parts at £330 + vat free fitting. that be worst case senario.
I thought mmmm thats a good deal.
I told them about my electronic controle module, they said they had secial diagnostic equipment specially for testing power steering beyond what main dealers have, so i went along to them one morning. I handed them the keys they were taking a look at it. 20 minutes later they told me Its not the pump. We'll be a couple of hours and your bill should not be more than £100 and it'll be fixed.
    I was Like "RESULT"
to their word 2 hours later i returned, all fixed brilliantly cleared fault codes, £74, he said you probably didnt need to replace alternator but still a good job done.

It turned out to be a Split wire. They had to trace the wires and it took 2 hours or so.

So before any of you listen to Vauxhall
Actually try someone who knows what their talking about.
Its amazing what 1 split wire could cause.

On monday my Steering light came on.. i think it was due to the battery being flat becuase it has been left still for 2 month and had to jump it to get it started. Anyways it hasnt been on again so hopefully i wont need to do anything but if i do, atleast i kno what to do now

Yeah very glad mate, even if it had been the pump they were free fitting and the service was much better and still cheaper than vx
Im a small business owner and it just goes to show everyone the little guy will go above and beyond whereas large companies dont care.
VX were quite happy charging me a fortune with no guarantee fix or care if it solved the issue.
The way i was spoken to on the phone is actually put me off having my vectra tbh or any vx in the future, which is sad.

    Yeah a split wire
still blows my mind that everyone wnated to charge for a pump at over £500 supply only,
this thread was just for anyone to check things first, and not to rush to vx straight away in panic and incour a large bill

Me too - but to be honest a 'split wire' is an unusual/rare fault (and more difficult to find) and the more commom faults are the ones that were listed in the post. I think he was very lucky to find someone with the skills to track the fault down and resolve it, but yes thanks for bringing it to our attention - its something else to consider when this problem occurs.
A similar thing occurred to my brother in law who had a 1.9 Fiat Doblo (same engine as Vauxhalls) that was turning over but not starting up. Went to 2 garages, one small local and one Fiat Main dealer, neither of which could find the fault. Eventually it went to an Auto electrician who traced it to a broken wire in the fuel supply system - which took him 10hrs to find and 65p to fix. B in L got a bill for over £600 which they got reduced slightly after a bit of haggling.
So what chance do we have of finding such a fault - probably best to check all connectors first and go from there - and good luck with it.

What is the name of the power steering specialist you went to mate? Im in Killie myself.

Ive changed my steering pump, alternator and battery on my vectra but still no power steering lol.

Could really do with going to a garage that might be able to diagnose the exact fault
