    Default Wobbly Gear Knob

    Hi Guys,

Im Steve and am a new member after just buying a Mint 2.2 SRI pre facelift.

Ive noticed one problem with the car since purchase which I am keen to get resolved.

When in Gear, the Gear Lever / Knob seems to have excessive play and can be moved about an inch from left to right, this is surely not normal ??

What could be the problem ? Is there an easy fix ?

Goes into gear fine with no sounds etc !!!

    Any Help appreciated...

Same happened to mine mate, however when I selected reverse, the entire top of the knob flew off.......along with the spring!

This may not be the official way, but with the knob removed, I put a blob of glue in the knob, then a small knock downwards seemed to resolve said problem!

    Thanks for your reply.

Pop the gaiter off. On the stick there is a shaft which comes out to the right about 1/2 way down which locates into a grey plastic arm.

On the end of the shaft there should be a small plastic cup. Chances are on yours the cup has either come out and is floating in the area at the bottom of the center console or it has just fallen apart.

Dont know if you can get this as a spare from Vx, but if you can it is likely to be pretty cheap

Here ya go, You can see the plastic cap in the arm, and also removed in the pictures

my fix worked and it didn't involve glue. i just put some rag around the spline and whacked the knob back on - just bulks it out a bit and stops it working lose. it's been solid and on for well over a year since.

Mine too pops off bad design of a knob if you ask me, I don't fancy glueing it on incase it needs to be removed anytime. So just simply turned it around slightly and tapped it on. Ok the gears show off angle but we should all know where the gears are. And dont know if it's had any effect on my gearbox for banging it on everytime it came off but car is in garage for Gearbox :-(

And here's me thinking i was the only one, it's not helpful when changing gear and the knob goes flying into the passenger floor area. I normally whack it back down but it still pops off, don't want to glue it, maybe blu tack will do the job or might use the rag trick like djr did with his
