Oil light coming on and completly losing power

Hi im hoping someone might know whats the problem. ive taken it to my mechanic and they have had a few guesses but nothing they are sure about as its not showing any fault codes. its a 1.9 16v cdti sri and when driving for no apparent reason the oil can light with a spanner comes on and then all the power goes. It wouldnt even pull away at a roundabout and gets quiet scary as the mrs uses the car with the kids mainly so want to get fixed asap. Its fine if you switch it off and on again afterwards.
Any help greatly appreciated

Oh yah forgit to say its 04 reg and no excessive smoke coming from it

Its a diesel. and yeah will be due a servuce in about 2000 miles. could it be as simple as that

It would be first place I'd start mate

Whilst doing it clean egr valve and map sensor

does it drive ok whilst it's cold? or happen when it's cold? or both?

Ok cool ill try that. cheers and to djr its hard to say cos it rarely gets up to temperature. Its happened after about 5 miles both times so should be warmish. it drives completly finenormally and fine after you switch it off and on again.
Does anyone know what oil us best to use

Vauxhall fully synthetic's good and cheapest especially if your in the trade club

if the spanner light is thrown up then surely the ECU would log some kind of fault? it even logs historic faults... i think it's worth seeing if you can get someone with opcom/vauxcom to read the codes... ?
