Book says you should use 5w30 semi synthetic. If it's got a lot of miles on the clock though, I'd run something slightly thicker. But 5w30 for most of them.

Fully synth, not semi. Should be the longlife stuff as well.

10w/40 is the semi synth oil.

Oops, you're right, I stand corrected, I use Castrol GTX Magnatec (have done for years) and got confused, the 5w30 is indeed fully synthetic, the 10w40 is semi.

buy the 10w30 semi synth, on an older high mile car fully synth is wasted, unless you spend you life in the red line,

vauxhall oils on trade club box of 4 for 30 quid last time i looked, just change it every 5 or 6 k instead

It's not a contradiction, as I'm not contradicting anything, I'm stating what oil I use in my engine. It's a contradiction if I say "I use castrol in my engine, and I always use Mobil 1".

As for the suitability of Mobil1, 0W40 is just the grade - not the quality, and it's a grade the EXCEEDS the required grade, which is not something that causes any problems. And as for the quality, not only does it meet GM's stated quality standard (GM-LL-A/B-025), many, many people around the world reccommend Mobil 1, including Porsche. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
