Recently, within the past week, the car has not only been feeling lumpy, but has been sounding lumpy too. Much more like a tractor than normal.. a tapping noise.
As I was getting particularly worried about the health of my car I decided to take a look under the bonnet. I had checked the oil a few week ago and it was just below the maximum level on the dipstick.. I checked again today and it is just above the minimum (possibly the cause of the noise I am guessing). I was then looking around the engine and spotted a bar laying unattached to anything.. I wondered what this was and then realised that it must be the dreaded swirl bar.. and after double checking I was right.
Notably, the first 3 valves (from the left) all look in good condition.. but the 4th valve is particularly loose and there is a large amount of oil and other gunk on the manifold around the valve (possibly the cause of the loss of oil in the engine I am guessing).
Now I know the general point of call is a whole new inlet manifold.. but I did notice a "how 2" on how to fix the inlet manifold instead, with a couple of washers.. I am guessing that due to the severity of the damage to my swirl valves (or at least the 4th one) the cheap fix won't be possible.. Is my guess correct?
Just like to point out too, that I had not had an EML appear until I reattached the swirl bar.. another reason that the how 2 will not work for me?
Also.. is it likely that my juddery drive at low revs was because of the swirl valves, or is there the possibility of something else causing this problem? (EGR is clean.. although I was thinking of blanking anyway)
