Default Problems with my swirl valves causing rough running?

For the last month or so, my car (1.9 cdti 150bhp) has been running extremely lumpy from tick over revs of about 800 rpm up to about 1700 rpm when the turbo kicks in.. when the turbo was on the car ran smoothly.

Recently, within the past week, the car has not only been feeling lumpy, but has been sounding lumpy too. Much more like a tractor than normal.. a tapping noise.

As I was getting particularly worried about the health of my car I decided to take a look under the bonnet. I had checked the oil a few week ago and it was just below the maximum level on the dipstick.. I checked again today and it is just above the minimum (possibly the cause of the noise I am guessing). I was then looking around the engine and spotted a bar laying unattached to anything.. I wondered what this was and then realised that it must be the dreaded swirl bar.. and after double checking I was right.

Notably, the first 3 valves (from the left) all look in good condition.. but the 4th valve is particularly loose and there is a large amount of oil and other gunk on the manifold around the valve (possibly the cause of the loss of oil in the engine I am guessing).

Now I know the general point of call is a whole new inlet manifold.. but I did notice a "how 2" on how to fix the inlet manifold instead, with a couple of washers.. I am guessing that due to the severity of the damage to my swirl valves (or at least the 4th one) the cheap fix won't be possible.. Is my guess correct?

Just like to point out too, that I had not had an EML appear until I reattached the swirl bar.. another reason that the how 2 will not work for me?

Also.. is it likely that my juddery drive at low revs was because of the swirl valves, or is there the possibility of something else causing this problem? (EGR is clean.. although I was thinking of blanking anyway)

Is there a how 2 to check this as I have 150bhp and wouldnt no where to look!

My egr is spotless but is still fooked.... causes lumpy idle and feels like a missfire knocking and banging is terrible.

So i blanked the EGR, its worked a treat if you can deal with the EML light being on and i bought the "no EML light" version on ebay ... what a CON lol

id try blanking it just to see if it sorts the problem as its a 10 min job (and £2,99)

For starters, how have you checked thre oil - roughly same time after engine switch off (about 5-10mins)? Reading the oil at different times after engine switch off right away will give low oil reading, where as leaving it after a long time will give a high reading. If you have been reading the oil correctly then is there any blue smoke on startup/idling? If so the turbo is on its way or there has been an overfill of oil.

The oil around the manifold is due to the oil breather in the air take - which normally gets consumed/burned off by the engine - escaping through the swirl flap bearings. The bearings if jammed open will give a flat spot and aren't known to give a lumpy affect. The EML light usually comes on if the drive module for the swirl flaps is mal functioning. The drive module is directly connected to Swirl flap 3 and which controls the other flaps viw the rod.

I did the '£1 manifold fix' How to about six months ago and it sorted the problem and is still working. My recommendation is get the exact washer size quoted in the how to as a few people have tried various others and said they had problems with them falling off; mine are still going 6 months/7k on. My valves also had a fair bit of gunk but they work; I didn't have any EML warnings though, so this could be another problem.

I put the Fiat restricted EGR manifold on my car after a few weeks of sluggish performance after I got it and it's been spot on for 18 months/17k since then. No warning lights either (unlike completely blanking it off).
