    Default Rear Quarter Damage

    Hey Guys,

A bit of advice if i may... A friend of mine has been unlucky enough to have his Vectra side swiped by a 4x4.

I wont go into the ins and outs of what is happening with regards insurance between them, i said i would post some pics and ask for some opinions...

Going by the photo's is the damage repairable? Or are we looking at a possible write off?

Really feel the for the guy, as like most he takes good care of his car, and is pretty gutted.

    Rgds

If 3rd party is at fault he can force a repair as long as safe to do so!

Looks fully repairable to me, unless the car happens to have an unusually low value due to galactic mileage or something.

Do you mean can he force the 3rd party to repair it, as in "here's my car, fix it for me or else", or do you mean can he insist that the car is not written off and is repaired instead?

To the first question, the answer is no; any guilty 3rd party doesn't owe anyone a repair, what they actually owe you/your mate is reimbursement of repair costs that you have incurred, so they could refuse to have anything to do with the repairs themselves and say "pay for it yourself, send us the receipt and we'll reimburse you". In practice, 3rd party's insurers do often carry out repairs themselves so as to keep a tighter control on the cost of the repair.

If, however, you mean can you avoid having the car written off, if you claim off the 3rd party rather than your own insurer, again the answer is no, as that insurer will use a similar mathematical formula for judging whether repairs are economically viable. However, they are more likely to offer you cash and say keep the car as well, whereas if your own insurer decides the repairs aren't economical, they'll insist on taking the "salvage" off of you rather than let you keep it. However, as per my post above it looks economically repairable to me, so this is probably just an academic discussion.

No, the figure is usually lower than that, about 60-65%, but varies depending upon how much the salvage (unrepaired car) is worth. The higher the value of the salvage, the more likely they are to not repair it, because they'll pay out the market value of the pre-accident car, and then get some money back by selling the salvage.
