Default Android market share overtakes Apple

bet the control freaks at Apple won't be happy about this

Android sales beat Apple iOS in Q1

According to a report published by research group Gartner, Android commanded a market share of 36.0 per cent in Q1, up from just 9.6 per cent at the same time in 2010. This represents a total installed userbase of almost 36.3 million smartphones.
In 2010 the most successful OS was Symbian, with it's 44.2 per cent market share. This has fallen to 27.4 per cent in 2011 and it will continue to fall as Nokia have since dropped symbian in favour of Windows Phone 7 OS.
In the interim though Microsoft's mobile operating systems remained the lowest rank individual OS, with market share falling from 6.8 per cent to 3.6 percent over the course of the last 12 months.
Blackberry makers RIM also saw a fall in market share, from 19.7 per cent to 12.9 per cent, while Apple's iOS saw only a small increase from 15.3 per cent to 16.8 per cent - for a new installed base of around 16.9 million devices.
"Every time a user downloads a native app to their smartphone or puts their data into a platform's cloud service, they are committing to a particular ecosystem and reducing the chances of switching to a new platform," claims the Gartner report.
"As well as putting their devices in the context of a broader ecosystem, manufacturers must start to see their smartphones as part of a computing continuum."

Was always going to be the case. Apple vet the apps fastidiously and anyone can make a app for android and put it on the market place apparently. Plus people are not stupid these days. You have 1 phone to choose from from apple or many many Android phones from peoples favourite manufacturer, another reason Nokia's market share has fallen over the last couple of years and names like hTC are as respected as Apple or Samsung now.

Not sure what to go for now, wanted to get rid of the iphone as im not an Apple fan, but my new car came with an iphone/ipod lead in the arm rest to charge and play music.. If i could get some kind of convertor / adaptor i'd change my phone to an android powered one...

Actually, thats got me thinking.. Off to enquire about buying another lead from Land Rover..

Vetting apps isn't necessarily a bad thing.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13422308

"More than 99% of Android phones are potentially leaking data"

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03...droid_malware/

"Dozens of tainted applications have been discovered on the official Android Market.
More than 50 applications have been found to be infected with a new type of Android malware called DroidDream, an information stealer."

Now with an iPhone all you have to worry about is Apple tracking your ever move

And having your bank account details too. At least with Marketplace you don't have to enter any card details to get the free ones.

Why would apple having them bother me? Amazon have them, Paypal have them, Microsoft have them, thankfully Sony don't though LOL

Not sure if that bothers me as much as having to use itunes and Apple controlling what I can put on my phone, Microsoft got into trouble with IE being installed with every copy of Windows yet Apple are allowed to install apps all iphones that they cannot move, such as the stocks app which I and millions of other iphone owners have no use for whatsoever and would like to delete. And as a website owner I still don't like not being able to view flash videos because apple doesn't like flash and forces quicktime upon everyone..

BTW, a new iphone lead from land rover is more than £50..

and as for LR.. nothing is ever cheap from them, my old freelander cost about £350 for a service compared to £80 for the vec when I fist got that done.
