I recently put my veccy up for gumtree because im quite keen on getting a facelift one and it was more just a feeler to see what was floating about... anyhow with in hours i receive five or six different emails all stating the same thing- Hi seller, is this item still for sale?.
I suppose the generic email should have put me off but i replied yes to the first few. The first guy emailed me back and said what is your final price- once again alarm bells started ringing. So i replied (in the vain hope he was for real) "i would prefer to discuss that in person and not by email", he replied and i quote- "just tell me". I said (because i still have some self reserve left) that my number was on the advert and if he called me i could sort him out- he didnt reply.
I wont write the second email in full but heres how it went (some bits copied, some abbreviated):
Him: Hi seller is this still for sale?
Me: Yes it is.
Him: I want your car and willing to pay a good bit above your asking price plus £1550 to ship it out.
Me: "Ahh sigh, if you think for a second that i believe you would be willing to pay that amount of money for my car you must think im stupid.. however i suppose the only reason you keep scamming is because people are dumb enought to fall for your tricks. With all due respect mate.. **** off"
Him: im an oceanographer so i cant come to see it but i can pay for it by paypal and it can be shipped to my address for my son.
Me: If you can email and its so important to you, you can find a way to ring me and if you do then we can certianly chat about it:
And guess what- he didnt reply....
I got annoyed at this point and rang a local peeler (bobby for the you englesh people) to ask his opinion on whether this kind of thing was worth reporting and he told me that they had almost daily reports of this and the way they scam you is they claim they can not communicate with the shipping company. So they ask you to pay the shipping company whatever the cost to ship it and they will add the price of the shipping onto the total amount they will pay you. Of course you go and pay the "shipping company" and never hear from any of them ever again.
So a couple of things to watch out for:
- a very generic email; no names/info/most likely will not mention what your item is.
- They generally and im genuinely not being racist, will not write great english, pretty poor english in places.
- They will ask your final price and whatever it is they will readily agrree without any negotiation.
- They will never be able to come and see the car for themsleves as they are out of the country.
- The emails they use are always a first and last name followed by a number at gmail/yahoo .com etc
- They will never talk to you in person.
So please beware and if youre worried just ask to talk to them then you can at least guage in part for yourself what the potential buyer is like.
Cheers for reading- rant over
