Default head gasket gone??? advice please.....

my second car - a 1.2 16v w plate punto sporting has started to overheat after 10 mins driving.....car has only done 60k.

(i know FIAT = Fix It Again Tomorrow)

the heating has also packed in - i took it to local garage to get it sorted and they said head gasket was on the way out and to part ex it as fast as poss. (or they would fix it for £700!)

there is no sign of oil and water mixing, and no loss of performance...and when it idles with the water cap off, the water bubbles and creeps up the pipe, but doesnt bubble over almost instantly as i would expect it is also not loosing any water so i dont think any is getting into the gasket.

im thinking of changing the water pump as a first point...

any one got any ideas please???

could be a cylinder to water jacket leak..

have the garage done a 'sniff' test on the header tank, or have they done a cylinder leakage test?? that would show if there was any leakage of cylinder gases.

a head gasket failure doesn't always mean the oil and water will mix..

garage said they did a sniff test yep - said co2 levels where showing (if i remember correctly)

doesnt that also mean that there is low compression? which could also be caused by the engine being too hot when they did it?

    how are you sure??

there should not be much turbulence in the header tank..

when it's running hot, is there a vast temperature differential between the two hoses as GG suggested.. that would point to a water pump failure..

there should be minimal CO showing.. nothing that could be detected..it points to a leak between the cylinders and the water jacket..

did they do a leak down test?? that would tell you the affected cylinder

compression differnces between a good and a bad cylinder may be as low as 30psi.. the water will do a good job of holding up some of the leakage.

the guy was stressing the co2 levels where showing, i think it was on that information they formed their diagnosis, didnt mention any other tests.

i could take it to another garage for a second opinion....
