    Default Saab 95 Estate 3.0TiD V6

    Hey all,

After deciding to keep the Vec another year or so I've stupidly looked on autotrader and found a Saab 95 3.0TiD Estate 2002. I'm looking at Estates as we've got a dog and looking to pump out a second child this/next year, so the space would be good.

Now I know these have the same engine as the Vec 3.0 V6 but what are the Saabs like in general? Would this be a decent choice considering this one has 115,000 miles on and is 8/9 years old?? It has a tow bar so must have towed something, are the clutches stupid money like the 1.9cdti? What should I look out for?

Any comments welcome, might look at it this weekend, chances are I'll bail and save my money lol.

    Cheers

Dont presume a tow bar means its towed. It may have just had a bike rack like my old one. The 3ltr has an issue (I think with over heating) in the Saab. Give Abbott racing a call, they will tell you what to look out for and what can be done to sort issues

I believe they had issues with cooling the V6 on them and although it is the same engine as we have they had a habit of dropping the cylinder liners apparently. Speak to Celes about this, he knows more about it than I do...

Bare in mind that the 9-5 isn't based on the Vec-C chassis, it uses the Vec-B chassis, which is pretty darn old by now.

I don't know much about this engine, but I have had 4 Saabs and the last one was a 1999 9-5 Estate. I have to admit to being a bit of a Saab man.

There was 3 versions based on the lengthened GM platform (it might have been called epsilon or som other vacuous name) it underpinned a lot of GM cars. Make no mistake though the car is a Saab. Feels like one drives like one which is not all good. The quality of ours (having had a 99 turbo, 900 16v and 900 Turbo (all pre GM) the interior was OK if a little quirky. I dont know if the one u r looking at is the facelifted version. There were 3 in total. Original, SII (I call it shovel fronted) & SIII (I call it the sunglasses one). SI retained Saabs clear instrumentation. The SIII had Omega like instrumentation. Not sure about the SII. If it has small numbers and smal graduation on the speedo it is Not the Saab one. Early probs included weak syncro on 1st and 2nd in SI, modified for SII & SIII and fixed as required on SI. SI and poss SII had a suspension set up for comfort which had an odd lift-off lurch oversteer if pushed hard. I have experienced this and although I didnt loose control it was pretty violent and a squeaky bum moment. The only other problem I came across is the accelerator pedal set too high and makes long journeys hard on the calf. This apparently was to do with the swap from LHD to RHD. The rear shocks are a weak spot and leak. In 9 yrs (The car was just under 11 yrs old at the time) of ownership and sold at 78k, the 2.0t had just had 3sets of rear shocks. The fronts were never changed. One coil pack (petrol cars only have this) and 1 set of discs and 3 sets of pads on front and 2 on rear. The estates are not that cavernous in normal mode (about 416 litres below the parcel shelf) By comparison vec-c has about 500. Roof rails are standard. Premium hi-fi is good (5 speakers). There is another one above this. SI started with the standard spec then the SE. Later models used the names. I think Linear was the bottom then Vector and it got more complicated as sports were introduced. Interiors are hard wearing spacious and comfy. The tow bar could have been used for anything. Ours had a towbar but it was used occasionallyfor a small trailer, so we were told. Also check the dash computer pixels are all there an the aircon panel functions correctly. Saab servicing cost is eyewatering (£500+ for rear shocks -and no we didn't pay that). We found a German/Swedish specialist. We liked it so much we very nearly had the SIII Turbo Edition HOT (260bhp) but head ruled and we got a Verso T180. I love em.
Good luck if u have any other queries, shout!
