Default help from any vehicle painters on the forum

I recently refurbed one of my alloys and something weird has happened. First i flatted the wheel, then used etch primer on the bare alloy bits, then primed, colour coated and then lacquered, the wheel looked great, all new and shiney. this was about six weeks ago and since then it has been in my garage. yesterday i went to the wheel, it still looked awesome and thought ok tomorrow i will refit it, so applied a coat of mer wax and it looked fine. Today i went to fit it and ,,,,,,,,, the lacquer is full of little cracks???????? Now i used acrylic paint as i was told this is harder wearing but should it have reacted to wax in this way, or have i prepped it incorrectly?

sounds like wax has reacted with paint. the only thing to do is to flat back and repaint

First post...I suspect you used 1k acrylic lacquer from an aerosol, each coat needs to dry off for 5 minutes and only apply thin coats, ie.3-4 to build the thickness not 1 or 2. What has happened is each layer of paint has not fully dried or 'gassed off' and its these solvents that are trapped that has now cracked the brittle film of the lacquer, causing the crazing. I doubt the wax would of blocked up the porosity/film of the paint enough to have prevented the gases (solvent) escaping.

Your options are to remove the fresh paint with thinners, or wait for a month until everything has fully dried and then flat back, use an isolator coat and then repaint, always iffy when done this way and i would do the former.

thanks for the reply burbo, i did use 1k paint and lacquer, thing is this wheel was painted over six weeks ago and left to fully harden. the cracks only appeared after i applied a wax coating and there were none visible before that. looks like its a full repaint, but as i said, this time im going to use celly.

there is always the possibility that the laquer has cracked owing to the pressure from applying and removing the wax especially if there was only a few coats ...

Problems dont usually show until around 6 months, quicker in warmer weather..

Your asking for a reacted mess using celly, best thing it to redo them in waterbase, but that cracked laquer will have to come off or it will show through again.
