Default 3.0 v6 cdti black smoke

    Hello everybody,

I've owned my 2004 v6 cdti for over 2 years now and under full throttle it has always produced a large amount of black smoke. The performance doesnt seem to be affected and it has a stainless steel exhaust with no silencers from the cat back. Would anyone have any ideas to what this may be, i dont want to be shelling out money willy nilly for new EGR if it maybe isnt that. Could it be that it needs a remap for a bit more air as the exhaust is more free.

How do you drive your car? Because both my 3.0's used to chuck out a fair bit of soot if driven slowly. I drive my current Sig with a lead foot and it NEVER smokes black. On my old one however, when the smoke got real bad, not even a lead foot cleared the lungs...it needed a new EGR.

Well i dont drive slow but then my wife does sometimes, it just seems thats anytime i'm driving and really floor it the black suit appears. It maybe could be an EGR but would this be something that gradually goes or just goes with a pop.

If you drive at low revs for a long time, and then boot it, this engine seems to normally produce black smoke for about 5 seconds
For example, I drive at a constant 40mph in 5th gear whilst waiting for the engine to warm up
When the needle starts to move, then I down shift to 4th gear and boot it, resulting in a large amount of black smoke

Does this sound like what you are experiencing?
If not, can you elaborate on the circumstances

Yeah that would be exactly what the problem is, for example i'd be sitting behind an old granny doing 40mph for about 2 miles down a road and then when a clear stretch appears i boot it and look in my rear view mirror and there's a massive hazey cloud. I thinks its the initial first time you put the boot in it the smoke appears and then when you continue to keep the foot in it clears up ok.

I have personally put this down to a lag / delay in the ECU controlling the engine, which keeps the EGR open whilst the turbo is not required

If you do the opposite and use high revs for a long time, such that the turbo is required, then there is no smoke
For example, following a lorry at 40mph in 6th gear, I can see the road ahead is clearing so down shift to 3rd gear for about 15 seconds
On booting it there is no smoke

I noticed this smoke when my car was new, using it sometimes to stuff someone behind me, cough, cough, cough
