Default Odd never seen before warning light

    Hi all,

For the past week or so I've been getting a new warning symbol in the tacho display that is not in the book and i've not seen it before.

It's an oil can with water symbol below all in the same picture. It is quite intermittant and only comes on when engine is really hot but doesn't come on all the time.

I think it's oil temperature but the engine temp is just over 85 ish. Does anyone know what this symbol is please?

    Thanks.

The only one I can see in handbook is an oil can with like waves underneath it, that's engine oil level.

as grumpy says it's the low oil warning light,if your oil level is ok it's the dynamic oil level sensor that's faulty,or a faulty wire in the wiring harness to the sensor.

    sounds like that one...

does it look like this, http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72772

If your oil level is fine this can also be caused by the plug/sensor being loose and just needs reseating, it happened to me.

Yep this is the one. Thanks guys

Had a full decoke, flush and new Mobile 1 oil done about 700 miles ago. It's only done it since then but oil level is fine. Do you know if the sensor is on the front about half way down the block?

this is the bad news VF,you have to drain and remove sump as it is held in with a retaining ring and then is removed from inside sump.

Arrrh! I'm fed up with being under this car on a weekly basis. I've just done the drop links and rear banana bars, new intercooler and pipes.

On the off chance, what if the oil was too thin, would that cause the light to come when the engine gets really hot by thining out the oil even further? Garage used Mobile1 0W 5, which I thought would be just fine at £60 for the oil.

No thinning of the oil affects the oil pressure not oil level warning ,the faulty sender is to warn of low oil level in the sump, you can remove wiring harness and clean connections,it may help but i think you will have to replace sender, just make sure the wires to the sender are not touching each other this will give the same reading.
if your oil has only done 700 miles drain into a clean container and reuse,be carfull to keep everything spotless, clean sump drain area before removing drain plug
I allways use mobil 1 ,I pay about £25 from costco

Thanks JB. I'll get up on stands Monday on may day off! Check out the sender wires first and then talk to Taunton VX on cost.

    Cheers

the plug just clips on to a connector on the outside sidewall of the sump. When I bought my car i had this light and many others (got it very cheap) and found that the plug was connected the wrong connector, since then it has come loose and i just had to reseat it... two minute job..
