    Default Telephone & BroadBand (BT v Virgin Media)

    Folks,

    Im in a pickle, recently moved and now been advised that I can really get much via VM as not in a cabled area so everything needs to run via BT line coming in (which at the moment is disconnected).

    Anyway, cut a long story short, I rang BT and this is what they have to offer me with the a max 8mbps line speed available:

    BT BroadBand Option 1:
    - Free re-connection of the Phone Line;
    - Free evening & weekend calls to UK land lines;
    - 1000 minutes per month for 0845 & 0870 numbers;
    - Up to 10gb Monthly download allowance for BB;
    - Up to 8mbps Line speed (but more likely to get about 4-5mbps);
    - Free equipment for BB (BT Home Hub 3);
    - Something called free WiFi anywhere () ;

    PRICE:
    - Telephone for £13.90 per month;
    - BroadBand free for first 3/4 months, then £13.00 thereafter.

    TOTAL MONTHLY COST: £26.90 Per Month.

    ................then when I mentioned im shopping around and considering VM I can get the following SAVE PACKAGE which gives me all of the above, EXCEPT the evening free calls, this switchs to weekends only. Also the BB will be free for first 3/4 months, then it will be £5.00 a month thereafter.....so can get it all for £18.90 per month (need to check if that is plus VAT or inc).

    Anyway, there is another saving, but it means I have to pay up front for the full year for the phone line.

    So I can have all of the above (SAVE PACKAGE) but need to pay £120.00 for the full year for phone line (which equates to £10.00 per month), and this is a 1 Year Fixed Term Contract and I must make a minimum of 2 calls per month, and the free calls DO count towards this. Internet stays the same @ £5.00 Per Month with the first 3/4 months free.

    So assuming I get the 4 months free, the annual cost is: £160.00.

    NOW, has anyone used or using the BT services, especially the Internet/Boradband as I have heard some shockers in the past about their service.

    Also, your thoughts on the price above would be very helpful.

    Thanks.

    if you're a BT user you can download an app for smartphone that means you can access wifi from any of their BT FON / Openzone "zones". Handy if you're out and about and in the right area, but not exactly a deal clincher for the amount times you use it IMO.

    I changed to BT hub 6 months ago and can't say im that impressed, download speed is about 0.5mbps. I paid line rental all up front to which saved about £20 for the year and think we're just on free evening and weekend calls about about £11 a month.
    The service I found to be shocking to be honest, internet drops off when phone rings. Meant to be able to have 8 devices connected to it?? and customer services are usless, changed filters over etc and still no better.

    As soon as contract is up i'll be going to VM fibre optic

    I have been with BT for 5 or 6 years and recently upgraded to BT Infinity the Fibre optic broadband(to the cabinet) i was getting about 3Mb was told 1.5Mb but on Infinity get between 25Mb and 38Mb depending on time of day and was told 19Mb.
    I have had the knocks on the door offering this and that but have seen the good and bad with friends and relatives having already been with the other providers and all changed back.
    I also found BT very prompt and helpful when it came to resolving any issues, where i know a friend was palmed off for 6 weeks with one provider, and no internet for that amount of time is not good for me as i need it for work.
    So while the price of BT can at times seem a little more than the rest, i have found the consistent speeds at all times of the day to be consistent or in most cases better than was told i would recieve plus any problems were resolved very quickly, so i personally do consider it worth it for the peace of mind.

    Hey laddie

    I worked for Virgin and the National service (non cabled) isnt too bad. Event though I was staff I didnt live in cabled area. I have to say my postcode search advised .5mg
    but I was quite surprised as I never really noticed a great difference, and id move from a cabled area where i was getting 20mg!

    Plus the staff are uber friendly (obvioulsy)

    Virgin media is down so can't log into my account. Can't get TV, I live at the top of a dead end road and for some strange reason the last 2 houses wasn't cabled for fibre optic. From what I can remember, I have Medium Broadband and talk unlimited so for this it's £16.30 plus the virgin phone line £12.24 total £28.54 a month. Been at current address since end of jan was connected 10th Feb this year.
