    Default Which engine flush?

Some weeks ago I mentioned that my signum 1.9 cdti had a tapping noise from the engine when cold which has gradually worsened over the last year or so. This is despite me changing the oil (GM fully synth) and filter every 7-8000 miles since I bought the car 2 years ago.

Someone suggested an engine flush followed by another oil/filter change might help. I've always regarded such additives as 'snake oil' and never used them, but I'm willing to try one as a last resort now.

Can anyone here recommend one which actually works?

    thanks!

An engine flush should really only be done on three categories of vehicle:

    1) The engine has only done a relatively low mileage, perhaps less than 10k in total

    Or

    2) Engine flush has been used every time the oil has been changed, throughout the engine's life

    Or

    3) The engine is on its last legs, and an engine flush will be used as a last resort to fix the issue, and if the flush doesn't fix the problem then the engine will be scrapped.

The problem with using it if your engine doesn't meet any of the above criteria is that the flush can dislodge gunk and deposits that were sitting harmlessly out of the way in the engine, and they can block oil channels and nozzles. So either start using it before any gunk builds up (a low mileage engine) or don't use it at all.
