    confused Misfire

    Hi guys,

I have a strange problem with my 1.9 cdti. It does some misfire between 1500 and 2000 rpm especially when in low gear (second or third) but sometimes with fourth as well. I went to my garage they cleaned some pipes and they carried out diagnostic but no fault codes stored in ECU. They have also checked the EGR valve operation and voltage - all working correctly. They have also checked all turbo vacuum and boost pipes and they added some fuel treatment to the tank.

The car is much better now but still not 100% okay - not as it was a few weeks ago.

Mileage 99k, all services done, I just had a major service including new timing belt kit and cleaning away carbon contamination from diesel injector body.

    HELP!!!

    Hi,

Thanks for your interest in my case!

I have no idea. They supposed to be changed if they were part of the major service, I will ask my garage.

Is it a misfire? Or is it a hesitation (kind of judder/kangaroo)??
Is it only on light throttle changes?

Do you get it when you put your foot down?

Its sounds similar to what a lot of people get when the EGR/throttle valve/inlet is all gunged up?

YES!!! It is a hesitation! For a moment or so.

Sometimes I have the feeling the throttle doesn't respond (and I have to push it further down) some other times it is a hesitation. It is confusing because most of the times is ok and some other times is so little you think it is my idea but then comes the hesitation for the split second (like an instant on-off) and you think yes it's not me - something is wrong!!!

    Also Marky,

when I put my foot down 99% accelerates fast but some few times responds like has not enough air (breath). Only between 1500 and 2000rpm and with low gear (second or third).

    My garage seemed confused.

If you or any other guy could help...

    Many thanks mate!

It sounds like the EGR blocking the breathing. Very common on the 1.9 diesels and there isn't a definite fix for it.

You can help reduce the problem by cleaning the EGR valve, Boost (or MAP) sensor, throttle valve and inlet manifold.
Replacing the EGR may fix the problem as the plunger inside gets stuck.
Also adding EGR flow reducing gaskets from FIAT can help.

Some people have started to block the EGR using a blanking plate but this will make a light come on on the dashboard as the car thinks it has a faulty EGR. So you need to get the car into a chip tuning company to remove the EGR valve from the cars computer.

Basically the EGR puts exhaust gases (and therefore soot) back into the engine through the inlet manifold. This sooty gases then mixes with some oil in the inlet tpoo the engine and gunges everything up.
The EGR valve is opened and closed automatically by the ECU and it seem that the jerking/hesitation ocurrs when the EGR is opened or closed.
Its an emissions reducing device but it tends to cause more problems than it solves.

Might also be worth checking that your injector plugs are seated correctly.

With the engine running see if there is any play in them (Push them in don't pull them out) and see if the car sounds different.

    Hi guys,

I'm also getting a similar problem, all the cleaning in the world hasn't seem to fix it, and the EGR is less than 6 months old.

I'd herd that VX have an ECU update that they apply if fitting a new ECU, mine wasn't fitted at a dealer so that update wouldn't have been done.

Is it worth a punt on having the update done ?

it wasn't a VX dealer that fitted it...

or if it was i want to have serious words with them, they used liquid gasket instead of replacing the seals, and then didn't use washers on one of the bolts, so it bottomed out in the casting and wouldn't hold the plate flat (soot marks all over the place from where it was leaking gases) anyway thats a whole different story
