    Default Broken swirl valve??

    Bit weird this one.

Car went to vaux today to get new glow plugs fitted. When mechanic handed back keys to me he said he'd noticed that my swirl valve had broken off and basically I would need a whole new inlet manifold to put it all right. I've been using dealer for a few Years now and they've always been fair with me so I'm sure they're not having me on.

Thing is all this said, I've not had any performance problems with the car, just pretty poor mpg (around 35mpg round town) but this has been the case since I've owned the car for the last year. Is something bad around the corner or should I just leave it as i've been quoted best part of 750 quid!

two things bud , 35mpg is not that bad round town if you actually work out fuel against miles traveled and if the car drives as it should? why worry ? oh and the inlet is not that dear in itself so get a local garage to do and save yourself £300 +

u can be guarneteed mate that if your swirl bar/valve is broken off or loose,,,then trouble is on its way,,,,,ie...limp mode,,spanner lights,,engine lights,,,,,,u can check ureself tho,,,,take off engine cover and look down where ur 4 glow plugs are,,,near back of engine,,,ad u shud see the swirl bar,,connected to the top of the manifold,,,its kinda a funny shaped bar,,,if its very loose or completly disconnected(like mine was) then its new manifol time

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking really, just bit un-nerving when he first told me! I wouldve thought if it was that bad then the car would run like a bag of spanners. I've got my trade club card for vaux so I'll be able to get part cheaper I spose and like u say get someone else to fit it! Thanks for reply

it did kev,,,, i had limp mode twice a day and spanner lights and engine lights too,,,,altho there was other things wrong with my car too,,,that needed fixing,,,, the power difference with the new manifold fitted is unreal tho mate,,,,, ur best bet would be to get it done if ur intentions are holding onto ur car,,,,, swirl flap/ bar failure and DMF failure seems to be the most common prob on this sight ,,,,lol

Swirl faults are an issue upto August '07 CDTI 150's. The bar being off itself wont cause any problems other than lagging either lower down or higher up the rev range depending how the flaps are stuck.

Most won't know there is a manifold issue until they look at the manfiold and see the rod is off. The accumulation of soot in the 3rd flap can jam it and cause the drive module to work hard and possbily fail throwing up the spanner light.

Your right matey, I've been reading loads of threads on these subjects, I'm just waiting for all the other things to go wrong lol. So far I've had air con failure, alternator packed up, glo plugs knacked and now this- all in a year, oh the joys of Vauxhalls lol!!
