Default Error code P1901 - DPF Blocked

Had the car with the spanner light come on, c/o a diag check using my snap-on tester and got the error code P1901 when looking through the code/tip section on the tester the corrective action to take is apparently a ecu update and service regen on DPF, how do I know if my car is due the update without getting raped by VX. I also took the car the length of the M54 approx 50 twice in 3/4 gear high revs to try and clear the DPF but no good, I know they can be a b***h to clear has taken me 3 hours to do a new shape Fabia at work the other week. All to save the planet what about my pocket with the amount of extra fuel it uses when trying to clear!!!
