    Default Over filled the oil...

I topped the oil up on my 2.2 dti last night but I wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing as my son was screaming round the front garden. I've driven to work today and left the engine 5 mins then checked the level and its about an inch and a half over the max mark so I'm guessing I've over filled it by about a liter. Is this going to cause me a problem? I don't know if it makes a difference but in the past 6 months the car's chewed its way through 4-5ltrs of oil!!

If diesels are overfilled with oil they can actually start to run on it via the oil breathers in the intake system.

Just watch for the surging and the reluctance of the engine to switch off when you turn off the ignition.

That's quite a bit of an overfill and may well cause you problems - blowing seals etc.

I'd drain the excess out rather than just let it burn through it normally. If you can find a friendly garage/mechanic who has one of those oil sucker thingys (removes oil through the filler) it'll save you dropping it from the sump.

When I started it this morning there was ALOT of smoke for a couple of miles and the engine revved a little when I came off the accelerator but since then has been fine. You've got me worried about driving it home now.

I don't know any friendly garages.... Looks like I'm donning the overalls tonight. Biggest PITA is that my jack and axle stands are at the in-laws 70 miles away so I'll have to rely on the spare wheel jack to hold the car while I open the sump!

you can do it the easy way yourself get some clear rubber hose from halfords and a push down lid like on soap dispensers, put the hose onto the bottom of the dispernser, put the tube down the dip stick hole and squirt the oil into a container.
