    Default 1.8 spluttery/missing

hi, i've got a 1.8 sri 56 plate, on a cold start it's a bit spluttery and juddery and the rev counter moves slightly as if it's got a slight misfire, once moving it seems ok , but if you stop at traffic lights etc it still seems to be missing on the rev counter, is this normal for the 1.8 or could it be a problem developing...spark plugs were changed in november last year...i was thinking of putting in a new set of plugs , has anyone any recommendations as to the best ones to use....cheers

if the plugs were changed in november I reckon they're ok...when my 1.8 was doing this it turned out to be coil pack needed replacing.
Ideally you need the error codes. If it comes back with something like p0301 misfire on cylinder one, or another cylinder, its likely the coil pack is wearing out. As far as I know, if its misfiring on all cylinders its something else.
It could be plugs, but if plugs have gone so soon it must be a symptom of another problem.
Unless you know someone who'll do it for free, or the pedal test works on your car, it might be worth investing in a cheap code reader of ebay...be cheaper than getting garage to do it anyway, unless you know a mechanic with a kind face.

Mine does this and has done for a long time! It also appears to have a slight hesitation when driving along too. Keep getting it checked but as yet no codes. I have had plugs changed so am assuming coil pack is on way out just a matter of time I guess!

thanks for the replies guys, the car is not showing any codes/errors as yet, it just feels hesitant sometimes and as mentioned it seems to have a slight misfire, just out of curiosity how much is a new coil pack..

I had this on a 1.8 Astra recently.

I changed the MAF and everything resolved itself the symptoms i was seeing are

    1) when you started the car from cold the revs would increase to say 1500 and then drop to idle as if you had started it with your foot on accelerator
    2) It would seem to miss fire especially when cold would be very low on power and often jerky
    3) Would generally be low on power when pulling away, especially if trying a hill start etc.

I picked up a second hand MAF from parts gateway for £18 delivered and it resolved the issue, takes a couple of starts / runs for the computer to sort its life out though!

coil pack about 50 quid on internet i think, or i got second hand one for 25. It is still going strong, obviously wont last as long as a new one, but might be an idea if you are unsure of diagnosis. If you got that and a used MAF it would still be cheaper than garage probably. Its likely one of those two things.

Did you ever solve the problem?

I've got a 1.8 petrol, 03 plate, blanked EGR with the same problems.

I've cleaned throttle body, changed plugs, new air filter, air box mod, cleaned MAF..

Problem seems to have died a little but still can feel it there!

Try pulling the plug on the MAF, if it runs rough after that your MAF is ok, if it runs rough chances are it needs replacing. Coil packs are also prone to failing on the 1.8,
