Default Faulty thermostat, does it damage the engine ?

Got a faulty thermostat, seems to have a mind of its own

Does it do any damage to the engine at all ?

Better not, mine has been dead for 4 years. It will lower MPG as the ECU thinks the Engine is having to warm up.

It depends on if the thermostat is locked open or closed

In most cases it will fail locked open, this is not an issue
This results in overcooling the engine

However, if the thermostat locks closed, then it is an issue
This results in reduced cooling in the engine, and may eventually end in overheating and engine failure

The stat never goes above 85c , but like today it took over 20 miles before it moved but it only moved a little bit, later on it was 85c but then drooped down to the bottom again

Its a 1.9 cdti if that makes a difference, thought diesels only use what fuel they need and dont waste it like a petrol , could be talking waffle but that's what i was told many years ago

as gazza said,,,it may increase fuel consumption as an over cooling or stuck open thermostat will make the ecu work the engine slightly harder to get it up to operating temperature all the time,,,i drove a car once for a year with a termostat that never raised above cold,,and to be honest it never caused problems,,,they are handy to change tho mate,,and not that expensive either

    Another one

Had most of them now, wonder how many more to come

Had a look and its quite a bbig lump to change, last time i changed one on an Escort it was just wedged in the pipe and 2 mins to change , things get too complicated nowadays

Change it, simple enough if it's the 150.

Mine was like you describe, it will be stuck open.

    Around £35 off ebay.

    Here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-Therm...item2eb4d7ada8

Give em a ring first just to check you've got the correct one, next day delivery if ordered before 3pm

There's also an 'How to' somewhere on the forum.

Its the 120 i have , seems to have a large silver round thing above it , looks a bit tricky to get to the screws.

    Thanks for the link
