Default Interesting facts about 19" Tyres on Vectra C

I called into the local ATS today getting some prices for tyres.

After telling the guy the size (235 35 19"), he said I only had a few options, Continental and Michelin being the main two.

After asking why, he told me that Vauxhall's fitted with 19" tyre should have the type built for "Extra Load". I doubted this and looked at my car, and sure enough, Extra Load is on the side of the tyre as clear as day.

ATS said they would refuse to fit tyres that are not the extra load type.

I was also told the same by Walkers Tyres who added to the fact that the normal tyres would wear un evenly. He then pointed out insurance, If I had a crash and the insurance started to look into it, it could invalidate insurance if the tyres are under specced.

After speaking to Vauxhall, they clarified that the higher spec tyre was down to the weight of the car and it's low profile rubber.

It has made me think, I will stick to the right type of tyre.

    So, 4 x 235 35 19" Michelin Pilots or Conti's.........£675 all in!!

At least these two makes are good for 25,000 miles.

I just worked out, that I could get 4 x Falken tyres (If they did the Extra load) for about £450 fitted.

But these would last about 12-5000 miles, so would you agree spending the extra on Michelins would be wise and getting up to twice the mileage from them?

sorry.. i only ever fit 'quality' tyres..not alternate brands, but i'm in the lucky position to be able to do so..

I'd buy the premiuim brand and enjoy the extra benefits of longer service life and a more modern carcass design.

It is a big bill now, but like you say, the service life will nulify any savings..

If you can get 25K miles from the Michelins then i would say it works out to be more cost effective in the long run over the Falkens.

On my old Vectra 1.9, I got 26500 miles out of a pair of Michelin Pilot 225 45 18" tyres.

I just won't go down the budget tyre route anymore.

Not sure to be honest, but to be fair, on my old car with 18's, I was never asked the question. So maybe not. But I always had Michelins on it.

Currently got 24'000m out of my Contis with around 3mm left. I've got two very slightly worn Contis for £90 courtesy of Plasma, waiting to be fitted in a month or two!
