Default Rover 25 1.4i Idle Rev issues (trying to help a friend)

    Hi folks,

Im trying to help out a friend with his Rover 25 1.4i.

Basically, when he comes to an idle state (i.e. lights, roundabout, etc), the rev's fluctuate between 500rpm to 2000rpm. Naturally when they go to about 500rpm the car usually fizzles out and stalls, then after a restart he can carry on until idle again and same problem.

I have seen the problem but he says it also feels as though its misfirring!??!

When the revs fluctuate, he says sometimes they just climb to 2000rpm and then if he gives it some throttle, they come back down and then start to hover again.

Can anyone help? Quite urgent. Im going over to have a gander in about 40 minutes to any ideas and hints prior to that would be great as id like to go armed!

    Thanks.

    Bye bye Vec B

I have had a read, seems like it could be TB or even just a knackered cable.

Not sure if the rover has similar components but my escort (many moons ago) used to do this.
Turned out that the "idle control valve" was knackered. That sorted things for almost six months then it started doing it again. Figured it was the injection system that was up the spout so decided to scrap it.

    Hope you get it sorted

    Think this is it:-

    Found from here:- http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=327460

More here (LINK) including "Throttle position sensor reset" (not sure if this works on the 25 though)

    Google is your friend lol

    Good luck
