firstly a litre of oil usage in 1k miles is acceptable according to VX...
as for the cloud of soot, it all depends how much... my old dti didn't smoke too much when booting it apart from when the boost pipe split
the black smoke you see in your rear view mirror is the particulates from the burnt diesel, commonly referred to as soot. totally normal, although i wouldnt expect it to be too thick a cloud. itll mostly happen after youve been cruising & then drop it down a cog & accelerate, at least thats when it happened with a previous diesel car i owned.
the colour smoke you need to be worried about with regards to oil is the blue variety, a sure sign youre burning oil, either due to valve guide oil seals going or piston rings gone, but thatll usually be coupled with lack of compression in 1 or more cylinders, which you should get checked before you start taking stuff apart.
i stand to be corrected on the above.
thanks for the advice . its does only happen when i boot it . because i got the wife to put her foot down while i looked from behide and thats when i noticed it . it starts with a clear exaust and when reved up a quick cloud of black smoke comes out.
