These won't be cheap when they fail but technology does have to move forward.

Default engines of tomorrow - laser ignition

Quote BBC News: "Car engines could soon be fired by lasers instead of spark plugs, researchers say.
A team at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics will report on 1 May that they have designed lasers that could ignite the fuel/air mixture in combustion engines"
The approach would increase efficiency of engines, and reduce their pollution, by igniting more of the mixture.

Spark plugs can last 40k there not as much a problem as they were 15 years ago, However if we can find a replacement and do away with coil packs as these are the big cost this would be ideal.

    Next egr and turbo and............

Think from what they say, they've done away with the lens bit with the ceramic bit. Spark plugs are fairly cheap and reliable now, can't see these taking over anytime soon.

It will be emissions legislation that will drive adoption, in theory using a laser should give more complete initial combustion and and allow further pulses if required, meaning less emissions and greater fuel economy.
