    Default Stolen / Recovered

Is there any reason why if I was looking to purchase a new (2nd hand) car I should avoid a stolen / recovered car?

    Obvious points to consider

    Could have been written off
Will have been thrashed while stolen

Would the insurance be much higher on a stolen and recovered car?

i had an r reg citreon xsara previously stolen recovered, going prices for them back then was around £1200, i paid £500. it was the most reliable car i'd owned until i had my daughter when i spent cash on something newer, until Amelia was born, i'd never spent more than £500 on a car, buying the stolen recovered xsara meant that i got a lot newer better car for my money.
it devalues a car by around 40-50% so a good bargain is there to be had, if not walk away.
my insurance was no different from memory. worth getting it checked over by somebody who knows there stuff to check for accident damage and that the engine hasnt been trashed

I used to work in insurance and several staff bought cars that the insurer was selling as stolen/recovered, but that was because they could see on the claims system how long the car was missing for and what the mileage was when it was taken, and therefore how many miles had been done by the thieves. Without this insider info I wouldn't risk buying one - ever heard the phrase "Drive it like you stole it" ? I doubt that a visual inspection by a mechanic can accurately identify all the wear and tear caused by it being thrashed, and that includes the gearbox, clutch and flywheel.

One VERY relevant phrase, and one reason I have such concern buying an ex-daily rental

i have owned a few stolen recovered cars many moons ago now but, the 1s i went for where the 1s missing int seats trim alloys and the odd broken windows, depending on who is selling it and what it needs it may not be as cheap a buy as you think

There's a different phrase for those.... "What's the fastest car in the world? A hire car".

It's in the same class and catagory as a Peugeot / Citroen van in France, they seem to be powered by Formula 1 engines
