    Default Free Windscreen Replacement!

I had a windscreen chip repaired by Autoglass last year, and was never totally happy with the quality of the work. The chip is supposed to become almost invisible after the resin has been injected into it, but it was still just as visible and could also be felt when running my finger over it. I think the technician couldn't be bothered to do a good job, as he mentioned that he was being made redundant at the end of the week, due to a reduction in windscreen work at his depot.

Over time, the resin has completely come out and the chip is now back to how it was before the repair, and is catching the wiper blade. I phoned Autoglass' call centre today, knowing that they would cover the work under their warranty, but to my surprise they said they wouldn't do another repair, instead they'd replace the whole windscreen - free of charge. Does that definitely mean no insurance excess, I asked. Indeed it does, they replied. Just waiting for the local depot to phone me now, although knowing my luck they'll say there's no such thing as a free windscreen replacement and the call centre shouldn't have mislead me....

On a related note, this will be the 4th windscreen this Signum has had, which seems a lot for a 2004 car. I had the screen replaced in 2009 and the technician mentioned that the one he was taking out wasn't the factory one, so that must have been the 2nd, and the one that will come out this week will be the 3rd, with the 4th going in.

They phoned back - it is indeed free.

My screen is covered in tiny road rash chips that can be seen easily when the sun hits it and two 10 mm chips, not too bad i guess for 109k miles. Autoglass said that as one is close to the 'A' pillar they can't repair it, so a new windscreen is needed. My insurance will cover it, but i have to pay the £80 windscreen excess and they say it will not affect the NCB or increase future premiums. I suppose £80 isn't too bad for having the windscreen replaced.

You're right, £80 isn't too bad, especially as some windscreens nowadays cost £500+ , but what's bad is that the excess seems to go up every year.
