    Default Space saver spare

I had a puncture on Monday and had to fit the sapce saver spare. I couldn't get to a garage until Friday to get anything done. As I travel 50 miles a day to work I had to borrow someone elses car as the manual says not to drive too long distances with it. Come Friday I took it to the garage to see if they could repair it as it is virtually brand new (typical as I need two others aswell!!). Anyway the nail had chewed up the inside of the wall so they can't repair it. They also hadn't got any tyres in the right size, and couldn't get them till this coming Monday.

The problem is the car goes in for MOT on Monday and they tell me it won't pass with the space saver on because the tyres on each axle must be the same size. If it can't pass, surely it is therefore unroadworthy. How do Vauxhall and other manufacturers get away with fitting these as theoretically I could now be stopped by the police and prosecuted, not to mention how unstable it is with it on.

Anybody know any legal stuff about this, how would I go on if I were to be in an accident, would my insurance be void as it would if it had no MOT?

a guy at work got a puncture whilst on holiday in France in his volvo. he had no choice but to fit the space saver as he couldn't find a volvo dealer anywhere and apparently they are not 'normal' tyres that you can get from just anywhere.

he ended up driving back home on a space saver....over 400 miles!!!! at average speed of 40 mph!

i didn't think you were meant to drive that far with them...maximum 50 miles or something.

anyway....don't know much about the legality of a space saver TBH. can't you get a tyre from another tyre place and not the dealer. might have to pay the premium for cr£p work from kwik fit or someone.

It's legal to drive on as long as you can show you have attempted to have the proper wheel repaired. Won't do for MOT.

No a proper spare doesn't fit in the space saver place. Takes up the whole boot near enough.

    not quiet right Andy..

if you have a signum or an estate, then yes..a normal sized tyre will not fit in the wheelwell..

    BUT

if you have a hatch, you can remove the plastic ring under the spacesaver and a full sized spare will drop right in and fix down with the normal nut..

Quite a lot of us have got full sized spares..

Over here you can order your Vectra with a full sized spare, however not if 18"" of 19" and not on an Estate. So must be possible in other cases.

and the manual of my Signum tells that the spare wheel well is designed to hold a temporary spare wheel and to put a full sized spare in it you have to remove the plastic ring and unscrew both screw clips securing the floor cover (have not tried it)

I think the only think being saved is a few pennies by Vx by not supplying a full size spare in the first place!
