Default 1.8vvti repetative noise whilst driving..opinions please

Have recently noticed on my 2006 1.8vvti a slight repetative noise whilst driving along. It gets a bit louder when accelerating, but overall it's not very loud and you wouldn't notice unless it was pointed out, you can only hear it inside the car. It only makes the noise when it's in gear, stops completely if I take it out of gear. It's not a clicking or knocking noise, more of a slight rubbing / dull squeaking noise if that makes sence, and get's faster the faster you go. My question is, being a manual gearbox can you check the oil level / is it easy to replace, does it sound like a problem with the clutch or am I worrying over nothing. It may have always made that noise, but am just more aware of it now since I noticed it last week and am driving round with the radio down. The car drives without fault, and no problems changing gear or anything.
Any advice would be good, as I haven't a clue about engines and alike, and don't want to be fobbed off if I take it to a garage. It has been serviced a few months back, engine oil level is fine, and everything else looks to be okay. Cheers in advance!

Well have just taken it round to my brother and it looks like the gearbox is fooked. He's going to get a price from vx tomorrow for a recon, and I'm going to get a quote at a local garage for a rebuild.

My brother is a mechanic, I'm not....I haven't a clue when it comes to this. It's his opinion, after jacking it up and running in gear there's an awful noise coming from the gearbox. Going to take it to a clutch/gearbox specialist after work this morning to get their opinion on it, hopefully it may be something else but will see what they say and take it from there.

Have just been to a gearbox/clutch specialist and indeed the gearbox is on it's way out. Waiting on a price now to get it sorted. Not happy as the car has only done 43k. Going to weigh up my options and see what happens

Apparently he's had one gone at 27k before. They should be fine up and beyond 100k..think I'm just one of the unlucky ones. Hasn't told me exactly what's wrong with it, but am waiting on a call from him later.

Well mines done 60k and on its third gearbox so consider yourself lucky! The 1.8vvt is the biggest petrol they fit it too. The 1.7 diesel in the corsa and astra is the only engine with more torque they fit to this gearbox and they destroy them all the time....

It's your third gearbox??? That's not good is it, I had my recon box all fitted today along with a new clutch as mine was pretty worn. Drives like a brand new car, but then for the price it should feel like a brand new car lol.
