Default Signum Auto Gearbox - Advice

Today the Signum, a 2006 1.9, caused me a little concern when on three occasions on pulling away from a standstill at road junctions it seemed to not select the second gear immediately, the engine raced for an instant, then it found the gear, gave a bit of a clonk, and then everything went as it should from there.

This is the first time that it has happened, and it didn't happen every time and I'm a little concerned about it. I have driven the car for 200 miles today and apart from these three incidents, it ran perfectly.

Any thoughts and/or advice would be appreciated.

There are pretty much only two things you can do to improve an auto transmission's performance, other than spend hundreds/thousands on having it rebuilt or replaced. Those two things are

    a) Ask your dealer if there are any software updates that your car needs

    b) Renew the transmission oil.

Dealers don't like doing the second one, and will tell you that there's no specified interval for changing the gearbox oil, but those that have ignored their dealer and done it anyway have often found that it cures the problem. The cynical amongst us could say that dealers would prefer that the problem was left alone until it warrants replacing the gearbox, as this is far more profitable for them, whether the customer pays or Vauxhall pays under a warranty.

An update, by the way thanks for the advice, the car is in this morning for a gearbox oil change even though the problem has not reoccurred. Better to be safe than sorry.

One other point, will gearbox problems show up as fault codes and is it controlled by it's own control unit?

Oil change done at £45.00 - not bad. It seems fine and the problem has not reoccurred since the initial glitch - I'm touching wood as I write this, mustn't tempt providence.

An update. Following Jezzy's comment I contacted my local VX dealer and they updated the software - they commented that there are instances of my problem being caused by wear to the valve body on early facelift cars that was sorted out in 2007 by fitting an upgraded valve body.

My immediate thought was, if they have fitted a "duff" part, surely it is up to VX to replace it if it becomes defective.

I don't know whether there is only one valve or one for each gear.

After having the autobox fail on my v6 a while back , my advice would be - try and take out a warranty on it , just incase it goes bang .
