Default 150CDTI - Intermittent total power loss

    Hi,

My 56 reg CDTi 150 lost almost all power on a very busy roundabout today, scared the cr*p at of me and the family!

We managed to limp off the roundabout, just, but that was about all the car was capable of. There was a really bad smell, i assume it was from the exhaust.

Stopped for 5 minutes, tried the car again and just the same. Had a further 5 minute poke around under the bonnet wobbling any visable connectors and then tried again - all fine!

The mil light came on while the engine was running rough but went off when restarted.

I have checked the injector plugs and they are blue so i assume shouldn't be a problem with these.

Could the EGR cause such bad symptons?

I did read the sticky post about common problems but im not sure if my symptons fit, there is power loss and then total and utter power loss!!!

    Gotta fix this its dangerous.

Now the mil light has gone off will the code be stored or cleared?

    Thanks for any help,

    Dan

The code may still be there just the same it may not, what was happening just before it hapened ? EG sat in taffic / just finished a long run ?

was the engine cold / upto temp ?
id it sound like it was misfiring eg excessive engine vibration and sounding like a bag of hammers in a drum ?

it was fully warmed up, had just come off a dual carriageway.
yep was a very bad missfire, struggled to move the car under its own steam so more than just the limp mode.

sounds like the crankshaft sensor is breaking down, see if you can get the code ead if its still rgistered. about £40 ish for the sensor.

Another symptom is if you let it cool downfor a few minutes t will run fine then get back upto temp and mis fire again.

Checked for fault codes today and nothing is showing.

After the problem yesterday the car drove 20 miles home no problem.

One other thing i remember, pretty sure i couldn't hear the fuel pump buzz when trying to restart while it was running rough?? Possible connection??

And also while it was in fault mode it idled perfectly but misfired when revved.

Other than using the car with fault reader at the ready are there any other suggestions?

    Cheers
