    Default plasma tv

has anyone mounted one above a radiator?

im after a 50 inch plasma but the only place i can mount it is above a rad..

would it be ok if i put a shelf above the rad to deflect the heat outwards away from the wall, or is it just a bad idea.....

Perfectly ok as long as you read the manufactures guidlines regarding distances.

As above, refer to the clearance distances

A shelf for protecting the TV from heat, and diverting that heat away, would certainly be beneficial
What you might want to do is construct a front for the underside of this shelf, but leaves the sides open, this will then divert heat to each side rather than directly underneath the TV
