    Default Fuel Consumption

I hope this is the right place to post this.

I have a 1.9CDTI 120 SXI but unfortunately with no fuel computer

I usually try and work my fuel consumption out by filling right up and then resetting trip clock and then when I next fill up divide the amount of miles travelled by the amount of fuel and get my MPG this obviously averages out over the time between fill ups and not as good as real time

I would like to know out of curiosity how does the fuel computer work
is it actually measuring exacly how much fuel is being used and then diving by the speed travelled or is it measuring the RPM and assuming that x amount of fuel is being used due to the RPM

Anyway I would like to know what rate the enine is using fuel at at certain RPM's e.g. 2000 as if I can see I am doing 2000 RPM and travelling at 60 MPH then I would be able to work out what rate I was burning fuel at

    Hope this makes sense

    Regards

    Dan

There is nothing wrong with your method of calculating fuel consumption, thats how it was done before trip computers and is probably just as accurate as the electronic version. To answer your question on how the trip computer actually works, it takes all of the following into account, then presents it's calculations on mpg from there, distance travelled, fuel used, total time the engine is running, vehicle speed and load.
Just for info, my 120 estate has averaged 47 mpg over the 6000 miles i have owned her, which is mixed town and motorway driving and includes the extra fuel used when it carries out a dpf regen, of which it has done five that i know of.
