Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 problems

Im not sure if this is of use to anyone here but you never know.

Microsoft has recently released Service Pack 1 for 2008 R2.

There are some niffty upgraded/new features for Hyper-V Virtulisation servers regarding memory utils etc.

At work we run three Hyper-V Host Servers containing around 35 VM Guest Servers.

We upgraded our Host servers last week and started to notice slow downs on the network which got worse as time went by.

Today we spent the wole day backing up all of our servers and uninstalling Service Pack 1 on the three main servers.

After the initial upgrade the network traffic between our servers and iScsi SAN was horrendously slow. One of our servers took 1.3 hrs to boot. We also lost 2 LUNS (and servers) on our SAN which had been working perfectly before the upgrade.

Neadless to say its been a very stressfull week but we are back to normal again after removing SP1.

Just wanted to warn others if you are thinking of upgrading. I would hold off for the moment as I found that on the Microsoft Forums one of their senior technical guys admitted there was a bug and a fix was coming sometime after the 18th April.

Alot of other people were in the same boat as us, I found out after some google digging.

Well the good news is that my Chrome front indicator bulbs, side light smd's and rear number plater 501's were wating for me when I got home tonight.

At least I get to play tomorrow morning with the Vec again. A much more enjoyable experience that servers/computers.

cheers for the heads up i'll bear it in mind.

Personally i never roll out any updates straight away until the bugs have been ironed out by bill and his mates first.

Same with AV updates. I always wait a day to see if there are issues with them first.

Well your right of course

. We placed our trust in R2 SP1 as the other SP's for 2008 / 2003 / SQL 2005 had been perfect so far.

Looking back now we should have setup a test bed first, which I have been banging on about for quite a few months :-)

Ah well I can finaly relax now.

Cheers, the server here is telling me it wants to download updates, like to bet SP1 is in there. Will hold off a bit longer.

My pleasure. I too would hold off the moment. It seemed that if you were running a SAN network traffic between the San, iScsi switches and host servers went barmy once SP1 was rolled out. I was getting response times on the virrtual servers in the thousdands of ms!

Just to add that my other non virtual servers ran perfectly (with out the updates) whilst our virtual system was falling apart so the issue we believe was soley with SP1 for 2008 R2 and not a general network error. Their response times for the non virtual servers were 1 ms constant.

VPN'd in today and the Vitutal servers are behaving as normal after removing SP1

I have a seperate server for iscsi, it's only for at home and network booting so I use FreeNAS. Really chuffed with it. I have 4 VM's running on the Server 2008 one so will really be holding off!
